Shuts of Shrewsbury No 16 - Golden Cross Passage

High Street - Princess Street

This shut runs between High Street and Princess Street and we will begin on the Princess Street end, opposite the Old St Chad's Church.

On the left hand side of the passage is the Golden Cross Public House - the oldest pub in Shrewsbury, dating back to 1428. The entrance is now on Princess Street, though the pub goes most of the way along the passage. The pub was once called the Sextry, because it was originally the sacristy of St Chad's Church, and the passage was "Sextry Shut". On the other side of the passage these days is a bistro bar.

The passage was also called, in it's long history, "Stilliard Shut". The shut ends up on High Street, towards the St Julian's Church end of the street.

A very traditional passage in the centre of Shrewsbury. The pub is also recommended for meals and is now a hotel too. The first of three passages (though one does no longer exist - Phillip's Passage) between High Street and Princess Street. The next one along is Peacock Passage.
