Shuts of Shrewsbury No 6 - St Alkmond's Passage

Dogpole - St Alkmond's Square

This is a very short passage which gives access to St Alkmond's Square from Dogpole and I've seen it written as "St Alkmond's Shut" but I call it a passage. Also it is sometimes written, and I do it myself, as "St Alkmund's Passage" (with a "u"). I'm not sure which spelling is more historically accurate.



St Alkmond's Square is a residential (and very wealthy) area nestling behind St Alkmond's church. To get to the square without having to go via either St Alkmond's Passage or St Julian's Shut, it's just further around the churchyard of St Alkmond's than the Rupert hotel and Church Street.



St Alkmond's Square is said to be the site of an ancient royal palace dating back to pre-Norman times, but no archaeological evidence has been found yet (and the buildings there are ancient enough and can't be dug up!) - it certainly has a feel of quiet grandness. Also leading off St Alkmond's Square is St Julian's Shut, which goes to where the High Street becomes Wyle Cop.
