Title: Playoffs
Description: Shrewsbury Town

Proud Salopian - March 18, 2007 07:19 PM (GMT)
Shrewsbury Town could quite easily end up 7th this season... which means a place in the playoffs for promotion to (what is now) League 1!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/t...ury/default.stm

3 games behind Wycombe and only 6 points needed (thanks to a good goal difference). I think they could well do it. Though what happens once they get to the playoffs...

fingers crossed, making the playoffs will give us one more game at the Gay Meadow.

It would be great to move into the new ground on the high of a promotion.

kateharris - March 20, 2007 02:50 PM (GMT)
now if we got into the play offs would that mean we get to go to wembley again???

s.g.d. - March 20, 2007 06:31 PM (GMT)
the play-off finals are to be played at Wembley providing that they get their safety certificate.

I hope we play a bit better than last time if we do make it.

Goal-less draw against Barnet tonight - now 5 points behind Wycombe with only 2 games in hand..

your glass is half empty sir - unbeaten in 12, a possible 6 points to be had and we still have to play Wycombe.

Proud Salopian - March 20, 2007 11:22 PM (GMT)
Ah yes, the game against Wycombe - that will be crucial.

Proud Salopian - March 23, 2007 01:53 PM (GMT)
Torquay tomorrow at home - surely 3 points there! If not, Town simply don't deserve to go up..

kateharris - March 26, 2007 11:32 AM (GMT)
well they got the 3 points but i have heard it was a bit dire. too much playing in the air etc.

s.g.d. - March 26, 2007 08:56 PM (GMT)
not the best of games but it is all about points now.

Rochdale will hopefully come here tomorrow and attack which should make for a better game.

I will settle for another scrappy 1-0 win though.

s.g.d.

Proud Salopian - March 29, 2007 03:06 PM (GMT)
We're in the playoffs (for now anyway) after a brilliant 3-0 victory over Rochdale!

Proud Salopian - April 4, 2007 05:32 PM (GMT)
After a not so good two successive defeats for the town, the match against Wycombe will be unbelievably crucial!

Proud Salopian - April 8, 2007 04:30 PM (GMT)
The score was 1 - 1 (which is okay..)

Town now 8th, with a game in hand still over the other teams in the playoff positions and only a point behind Wycombe who remain 7th.

Tough game against MK Dons (what a horrendously Yankee name..!) tomorrow which hopefully we'll get at least a point from.

It's all very tight now! I think it's 50/50 that Town will get to the playoffs. If they do get to the playoffs I would say that there's a 15-20% chance that they will go through to promotion. So to be honest, promotion this season is looking slim, though possible (which is always good).

Back in the pre-internet days, in college, I tried to keep up with the fortunes of Shrewsbury. I had access to some newspapers from the UK. So, forgive this question, because college was a long time ago. When was the last time that Shrewsbury was in what you call League 1? Also, what is the criteria for being promoted? Do they have to finish in the top seven...and then, wait and see?

s.g.d. - April 8, 2007 06:08 PM (GMT)
hello Mark

Town were relegated from what is now league 1 in 1997.(the old third division)

in league 2 the top 3 teams are promoted automatically.

4th place plays 7th place away an then at home.

5th place plays 6th place away and then at home.

the winners of these two ties play each other at Wembley and the winners are promoted.

If Shrewsbury were to win all their remaining fixtures they would finish in one of the play-off places.

we start next season in a new ground so it would be really good to say goodbye to the Gay Meadow with a promotion.

O.K....got it....thanks for the info! Never did get an STFC shirt for Christmas. Hopefully, we'll have time to stop by and pick one up in August. That's assuming I could do that someplace locally without having to order it online.

Proud Salopian - April 9, 2007 11:54 AM (GMT)
I will be going to the game this afternoon - will be my last chance to see a game at the Gay Meadow!

Proud Salopian - April 9, 2007 07:51 PM (GMT)
Shrewsbury Town 2 - 1 MK Dons :D

Good game to watch (apart from much of the first half when Town were not exactly at their best). One red card and plenty of yellows for MK Dons, who were an aggressive side. With Wycombe drawing their game, Shrewsbury are back in the playoffs, though we do need to win pretty much every game (if we draw or lose a game, we have to hope that games elsewhere go certain ways).

At half time things were not looking so good with Town losing 1-0 and Wycombe winning at their game - it did seem that the playoffs were now out of the question. Fortunately Town came back in the second half in style.

Good attendance too - 5,238 :)

Good day for Town today as all their immediate rivals in the league either lost or drew! Tomorrow we play Chester away - but it doesn't matter if we win, draw or lose, we'll still be 7th.

s.g.d. - April 14, 2007 07:46 PM (GMT)
a win will keep us in with a good chance of finishing 5th and that will mean the second leg of the play offs will be at home.

it's an early start tomorrow but 3 points will make it worth it.

Proud Salopian - April 21, 2007 04:00 PM (GMT)
6th now with a game in hand still.... we could make 5th!

And... we only need 5 points from the next 3 (and last 3) games to make the playoffs even if all our playoff rivals win! :o :D

kateharris - April 26, 2007 01:29 PM (GMT)
i think town are going to keep us guessing and it will go to the wire.
i really hope we do end up in a promotion spot.
play up salop!!

Proud Salopian - April 29, 2007 10:15 AM (GMT)
One game left - home against Grimsby. Basically we have to win, otherwise results elsewhere will be crucial.

A win would put us 5th or 6th.

s.g.d. - April 29, 2007 10:52 AM (GMT)
a point should be enough because Stockport would then have to win by 17 goals at Darlington.

s.g.d.

Proud Salopian - April 29, 2007 08:11 PM (GMT)
Yes, you are quite right.

eatshrewsbury - April 30, 2007 10:28 AM (GMT)
My home team is/was Stockport, but now I live in Shrewsbury so I have split loyalties. With my knowledge of the hatters (Stockport) I can honestly say I doubt they will beat Darlington by 17 goals, though they do hold the record for the largest ever football league win - they beat Halifax town 13-0 in 1934. So I think Shrewsbury will be safely in the playoffs. It would be a nice way to enter the new stadium - up a league.

Proud Salopian - May 5, 2007 03:53 PM (GMT)
Shrewsbury 2 - 2 Grimsby

Shrewsbury end the season in 7th place in League 2 - playoff place achieved! :)

We now play Milton Keynes in two games and then either Bristol or Lincoln in the playoff finals (if we win against MK Dons of course).

btw - Stockport won 5-0 today!! And Wrexham have managed to avoid relegation.

Proud Salopian - May 8, 2007 06:07 PM (GMT)
Our playoff games should be on Sky sports btw - so on the 14th and 18th May if you can pop down to your local (that has Sky) in the evening!!

never mind watching in the pub,get yourselves a ticket, get down the Meadow one last time and cheer our team on to victory.

Proud Salopian - May 8, 2007 09:16 PM (GMT)
That will be difficult for me to do... ;) But I would if I were in Shrewsbury on Monday. Still, will be great to watch Town on TV here in Manchester!

Proud Salopian - May 15, 2007 10:18 AM (GMT)
0 - 0 at home last night.

We should really have won that match - it's going to be hard now to win away at Milton Keynes.

Friday 7:45, again on Sky Sports 1.

s.g.d. - May 15, 2007 05:55 PM (GMT)
the pressure is now all on mk dons.

big spenders, who finished 13 points above us, playing at their hockey stadium for the last ever time.

I wouldn't back against the Town spoiling the party.

last year only 1 game out of 12 play-offs were won by the home side.

this year only 1 home side has won out of 6 games.

COME ON YOU BLUUUUUUES!

s.g.d. - May 19, 2007 01:24 AM (GMT)
what a night! see you all at Wembley.
