bakerboy - March 17, 2007 03:41 PM (GMT)
Well the SABC golf course is going to be sold for housing and I hear that sutton grange garden centre which is next to the golf course want to build houses on there site now as well.
This is becoming a new houseing estate maybe they can call it stadium view housing estate!!
Well what do other forum members think about SABC selling the golf course

First I've heard of this. Where did you hear about this?

this has been in the news for weeks.
the council want to sell the club off as it is not as well used as it used to be.(a national trend apparently)
what they forgot to mention is that the golf club is the most cost effective amenity that the council has.
there can not be much left for them to sell off! - the new Guildhall for flats anyone?
s.g.d.

I've heard that they may want to sell off the golf course/club, but not about the houses. It would be difficult to get planning permission for housing on what is amenity land.

I wouldn't have thought so, seeing as SABC will be deciding whether to grant themselves planning permission after all!

The local plan is being updated at the moment and once the golf course and Sutton Grange are put with in the local plan the land prices will rocket. and houses can be built

Lets concrete the entire county over and done with it.

This is the link to the minutes of the council cabinet meeting that discussed this
http://www.shrewsbury.gov.uk/public/counci...-12/minutes.htmIt seems that they are considering buying land at Nobold to replace it. They need to sell it off to pay for their projects.

Nobold?
hasn't a business man just been denied permission to build a golf driving range at Nobold?
s.g.d.

Don't know about that. I think there was an application for a golf driving range at Cruckton last year but that was withdrawn.

The business park built by Alaska (who first gave us Cineworld) was the start of the process of encircling this area of land for future development.

I'm most against this, and am soon to write my second letter to the council over this.
Even if a new course was to be built, it would take many yeas for the greens to get as good as Meole's.

This golf course always seems to be in use to me, too.

The guy in the pro shop said the course sells almost 50,000 tickets per year!
When the weather is good, it is almost impossible to even get on the course at weekends or weekday evenings (4:30-7), you need to book a tee time such is the popularity.
Plus, the thing I like about Meole is the great atmosphere, it doesn't matter whether you have spent £1000 or £50 or your clubs.
It's all about enjoyment of the game, without the 'elitist' attitude that puts off so many beginners.
