Title: Is This Forum As Active As Usual ?
Description: Less threads, not many supporters
Andy Cooke - March 16, 2007 10:04 PM (GMT)
Just wondering, it could be me, are there less people getting on this Shrewsbury forum ?
Proud Salopian - March 16, 2007 11:02 PM (GMT)
Maybe there's not much to discuss..? ;)

I think it goes through spells, at the moment there is not a great deal going on... then it will pick up again.
Personally recently I have not had much time to spend on here.
I have just looked it up and in September we will be four years old thats not bad going.
Andy Cooke - March 17, 2007 11:39 AM (GMT)
I'm judging I suppose by other messageboards. The BBC site seems to always be 'packed' with things. I think I might publicise this board on there and see what happens !

Andy people tend to read forums a lot and then just post a reply if and when they feel that they have something to contribute.
Having looked through the 10 most recent posts in Shrewsbury chat, the only posts that you have posted were on topics that you started, anything that does not interest you,you leave alone just the same as the rest of us.
It will be good if you can advertise this forum as some new in put will probably prove beneficial.

Here goes.
What do you think about having your rubbish collected every other week? Will it cause you problems? Would you pay extra to have the council empty your bin weekly?
Andy Cooke - March 17, 2007 11:18 PM (GMT)

Re Board not very popular . As an observer for a while I have noticed that your main posters only talk to each other and ignore anyone who tries to join in .For example "lone ranger"posted a comment and he/she was completley ignored I doubt if he/she will bother again. This is not the way to get new posters !!!! Make them welcome and they will come again................

it is not a personal thing, I get ignored all the time ;)
sometimes a post, be it good or bad leaves no room to for a reply other than agreeing with it - this would give us a board full of :
"I agree"
"yes"
"spot on"
type of postings which I don't think many people would bother to read.
I think that we tend to reply more if we have a different view.

Nice to see that you are drawn in to this lairdmichael and a warm welcome to you!. I would disagree with people not answering or even being ignored. We have the same number of posters on here who keep the board going really I think. I have been on other boards such as the BBC and that seems very 'snobby' in comparison and you seem to have to try to establish yourself on that to get replies. I see some posters on here as very knowledgable on Shrewsbury issues, I cannot always opinionate too because I only work in this wonderful town.
Proud Salopian - March 18, 2007 08:00 PM (GMT)
There has been an increase in activity over the past few days now - would be nice if the forum was always like this. :)
lairdmichael - March 18, 2007 08:58 PM (GMT)
Thank you for your replies I now feel that I have a connection with you and if I see a post I can add to I now feel I will not be wasteing my time by joining in. There are probally alot of "shy" people out here who only need a little encouragement to join in .You may think <ok, I agree ,welcome to the forum> is a waste of your time and it clutters up the forum it but what do you want a busy cluttered forum or a quite tidy forum .I know which one's I prefer.
Please do not take offence at my remarks I am just trying to help ! Forum's are a hobby of mine and at the last count I post on at least 20 at home and abroad........
PS I am also a resident of Shrewsbury and proud of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

I hope that it gets used more as well.
The forum is the best way of finding out what is going on I think somtimes we can find out more than what in the newspapers.
Long live the Shrewsbury forum :D
kateharris - March 20, 2007 12:46 PM (GMT)
hi. i am new to this forum and have been welcomed, so thanks
and i hope my views have been helpful.
i also found this from the shropshire radio website, so advertising it has helped.
and as regards refuse collection i am not sure i would pay extra for this as at the moment because we are up a country road we pay the same as everyone else but we dont get our recylcing collected. we have been given a box, which we do recycle our bottles from but we have to take it ourselves.
i have complained to the council about this and they take the rubbish from the rest of the village and go past us to picklescott but just bypass us!
so much for encouraging recycling hey??

This was a portion of the post that was in the General Chat about a month ago....
I can tell you that I read EVERY new post on this forum. I check it at least once a day. However, living slightly west of most all of you, I can't contribute on issues that deal with the local area. Also, because of what I do for a living, I'm not going to comment on some rather sensitive issues. I also am on several forums including a couple dealing with how my retirement money is invested, and I probably contribute a lot more to those two. BTW about 25% of my $ is invested in the FTSE Index, so I am interested in your stocks.
Again, muchas gracias to everyone for the helpful info you've provided in the past. It's hard to believe we'll be in the UK in five months....Lord willing.

and of course, some issues encourage more debate that others...

What do you think about having your rubbish collected every other week? Will it cause you problems? Would you pay extra to have the council empty your bin weekly? |
According to a report in tonight's Shropshire Star, yesterday, Shrewsbury Council's cabinet agreed to scrap the weekly refuse collection from October. From then normal household rubbish will be collected one week and recyclable stuff the next.
The existing green wheelie bins will have to be used for garden waste and cardboard. Two extra plastic boxes will be provided so that glass, cans and paper can be kept separate. New bins will be provided for the black plastic bags holding your household rubbish. These will be micro-chipped so that in the future you can be charged according to the weight of your rubbish ( the cost of rubbish collection would no longer be included in your council tax bill).
We already put our cans, bottles and paper out for recycling and having extra boxes will save having to take the surplus to the skips. Being able to tip the garden rubbish into a wheelie-bin will be better than all those plastic bags.
The problem for us will be just where we can put the extra wheelie-bin. There isn't enough space to wheel our existing bin round the back so it sits at the side of the house. We might have to keep the new one at the back and carry it through the house to be emptied as there's only room at the side for one.
If they start charging you according to the weight of your rubbish, might some start putting their bags into their neighbour's bins? Perhaps we'll see bins with padlocks fitted!

I am new to the forum having defected from the now closed Shropshire Star forum. We used to have a bit of fun on there and people had a sense of humour, however, I have found on here that a little joke for my first post incited personal insults thrown at me! This is hardly the way to encourage new posters!
eatshrewsbury - April 4, 2007 12:08 PM (GMT)
I think forcing people to recycle - by hitting them in the pocket if they cannot be bothered - is a good move. But if I am now to be charged for they rubbish that cannot be recycled (there is always going to be some), where is my tax money going instead; the money that currently pays for refuse collection? Can anyone advise? Thanks
lemon squeezer - April 4, 2007 05:48 PM (GMT)
I see the big problem being people fly tipping. I was behind a car today where a plastic lid came flying out of their window.
The other big worry IMHO is food waste that isn't compostable, fish bones, chicken carcases, half eaten take aways. I think we're going to have an increase in the rat population and very, very 'niffy' bins around.
Andy Cooke - April 4, 2007 09:52 PM (GMT)
This threads topic seems to have drifted !
We have had the refuse collection system Shrewsbury is about to adopt for over a year in North Shropshire with identical periods of collection and it seems to be 'ok'. No vermin because the wheeley bins are sealed I suppose. They dont smell that much only when yuo open them to put waste in especially on a hot summers day.
Its a bit strange though that in the green bin as well as all the obvious stuff you can also put in and I quote ' Meat&fish 'waste, 'any other cooked food'.
The bins are checked and if you have put the wrong waste type in the bin the collecters dont empty them!
the old codger - April 5, 2007 12:12 AM (GMT)
Sorry about the drift off topic. Perhaps the postings could be moved to a new thread. This is something that is worth posting about as I'm sure Shrewsbury Council read this forum and others and would appreciate constructive feedback.
kateharris - April 10, 2007 09:26 AM (GMT)
we have just moved to a new barn and used to live in north shropshire where they had as mentioned already brought in the fortnightly pickups which we werent very happy about as we had a new baby and thought we would fill it just with nappies! but it wasnt too bad, but they could be awkward about stuff if you got it in wrong bin. but i am quite annoyed that now we have moved they have issued us with a recycling box but will not pick up from the end of the lane, even though they pick up from the actual village and go straight past us to picklescott!! i did complain about this as we are willing to recyle but was told they only actually recycle in 95% of shropshire.
so what about the other 5%? we are paying the same tax and possibly more but getting less service anyway?
at present we do use our box for recycling bottles which we take to the bottle bank but how is this fair? and then they want to charge extra for extra waste? well i hope in this case they put us on the normal routes before they do any extra charging!!! :(
