First I've heard about this!
http://www.shropshirestar.co.uk/2007/03/se...cruiser-arrivesWonder how long this will operate for until it too is withdrawn?

Sounds like part of the proposals to make greater use of the river with a river taxi service connecting various points etc
avronb - March 15, 2007 11:11 AM (GMT)
Put a lock on the weir and then run boats to Ironbridge, also dredge the river towards Welshpool, people will not use this service because of the short distance it can operate in.The boats at Chester travel many miles inland and are always popular with tourists.

I think boats should be able to run down to Gloucester and there should be a link somewhere between the Severn and the national canal system.
I also think there should be a boat marina where the river is widest in Shrewsbury at the Gay Meadow site, with all this in place people could come from all over the country in their boats to spend money in our town.
Of course we would have to spend money on dredging and a lock in the weir but it would greatly improve the tourism potential of the town.
There is also scope for static bar/restaurant boats in a few locations around the loop.

And? Just because that one wasn't well maintained doesn't mean it's a bad idea. Some people are such pessimists

I am not a pessimist I think that if the new flood defences fail the new theatre will make a great static bar/restaurant on the river :D

I think you will find this is a great asset to the town, At least they are trying to use our greatest amenity,it is also suprisingly different to see the town from the river!
I did hear a rumour that morris & co were considering a floating resataurant on the quarry side of the welsh bridge!!!!!! ;)
kateharris - March 20, 2007 12:39 PM (GMT)
i also heard that someone was hoping to make a floating restaurant where the old one used to be, but much better designed and i think that would be a great idea.
i think we should have a boat on the river its great!
i actually had my hen do on the original one back in 2001-think it was one of the first outings and it was great-we all stayed together(till we got off)
and also we have been on there a few times towatch the fireworks after the flowershow and that was great!
you do get a different view of the town from there.
i hope they do well with the new boat and we have that floating restaurant!!

With the new vessel set to use the River soon, help me understand the number of miles upriver from Frankwell it can go til the River bottom blocks it, and how far downriver it can go til it gets to the weir (which I can vaguely remember seeing). Added together, those two lengths -- is it fair to conclude? -- is the legth of the journey (times 2) that the vessel can now make. Then calculate the time, and you have the current maximum journey, for now.
Now, let's turn to the ideas -- I REALLY like them! -- of investing money in a lock at the weir so that a cruise to Bridgenorth can be added, and investing in dredging up to Welshpool. What further distances and times are added by each of these extensions?
Does anyone have a way of obtaining ballpark estimates of these two projects?
Could any merchants at Welshpoole and Bridgenorth be pursuaded to chip in on the capital costs?
If this takes off (catches on), the next estimates would have to include an additional vessel and a second berthing location.
Salopians do not fully appreciate the beauty of their County and its towns, large and small. Cruising like this would show it off. Have at least two prices, including a lower one for local ratepayers (I don't qualify) and a higher one for tourists (which I were there soon to claim myself to be).
Do you know how people would so love to see themselves floating under the Ironbridge? You could have a stop there, which would further boost tourism there -- we loved that spot.
Sorry, I do go on. But there's a good idea there, and the person who mentioned it should push further with it.

No chance of any lottery money for this, its all going to London.

To be fair, Greater London should get about 26 times as much lottery money as Shropshire as they have 26 times the population.
As far as i'm aware, the extra olympic cash is from special lottery games that you have to actively choose to buy rather than the main lottery pot but I could be wrong on that.

There are plans to make greater use of the river in Shrewsbury. This is a link to the Council's website

as long as the new boat has some kind of roof. I went on the old one a few years ago, it was the height of summer and by the time we got to the English Bridge I was burnt to a crisp.
restaurant boats would be great. I think the Thai one broke apart because they tethered it too close to the bank. I did that on the Norfolk broads once, woke up in the night when the tide had retreated and the boat was at about 45 degrees, scraping against the jetty. Oops
