Title: Pubs Coming And Going
avronb - March 10, 2007 06:12 PM (GMT)
The Plough pub is reopening and i hear the Monkmoor and Belvidere is closing,is this true?

I have heard a few people say that the Monk is about to be sold for housing.
It is the first time that I have heard the Belvidere mentioned.I should imagine that the clientele at the Abbey will change if the other two do go.

I wouldn't have thought that the Belvidere had much potential for re-development unlike the Monkmoor.

The Plough is now open, complete with bouncer.

There's an interesting article in tonights Shropshire Star about Punch Taverns and how they are forcing tennants out of the market with overinflated rents and beer prices.
After having a quick look on their website there are 39 of their pubs in Shropshire available for tennants. After reading the article its easy to see why.

Whilst cycling around in the Haughmond Hill area today I went through all the villages there still with their own public houses. Uffington - Corbet Arms, Upton Magna - Corbet Arms, Withington - Hare and Hounds, Rodington - Bulls Head, Longdon - Tayleur Arms, etc. There's a pub in High Ercal too, though I can't remember its name. Also, though I didn't go through there, there's one or two in the Walcot area. Not bad going - a pub every two miles or so!

it is the Cleveland arms at High Ercall.
I hope that all those pubs are still there this time next year.

Some pubs really are the heart and soul of many communities -especially in rural areas. It's a shame that so many good ones are shutting down - and it seems to be happening all over the country.

Sorry, but the closure of pubs is rather like fox-hunting - an issue which I feel that I ought to have an opinion on, but actually I'm not in the least bit bothered either way. Pubs seem to be one of things which all Englishmen are expected to defend as a matter of course. But why? Paying £2.75 for a cloudy glass of chemicals in an atmosphere redolent of reheated chip fat is hardly an enticing prospect. To be perfectly honest, the issue of pubs closing down simply doesn't bother me hugely - they're probably more use as housing.

I sympathise with your point of view Townwalls, the pubs that are popular and cater to modern tastes will succeed, some of the ones closing down recently are not particularly inviting to the casual passer-by, serve no food or rubbish food, are in need of a redecoration and that's why they are going bust.

So based on that Jonesey it will be the survival of the fittest. Not sure if that would be a good or bad thing personally. I do see Townwalls' point though.

Well, that's the way the world works, give people what they want and you'll do ok. If you don't you won't. Don't see anything wrong with that myself.

I meant that a lot of money can be churned into a theme pub, Shrewsbury has lots. My opinion of them is they are somewhat atrocious untraditional american-themed trash as you can get.

We get the culture we deserve, if people want to go to these places then so be it. There are plenty of other people that don't like that type of place though and other, better places are thriving too.
