Title: Screen Resolution?
Chris Pritchard - February 17, 2007 05:25 PM (GMT)
I've just purchased a new pc wth widescreen monitor and I have noticed how sites look differently and can be difficult to read and use when they are set to a percentage for width and not by pixles.
Having previously used a screen resolution of 1024*768 then moving to my new resolution I have made changes to the forum as it was very difficuly to read on a 21" monitor.
For all our regular users do you have any problems with the forum and out of interest what resolution do you use on your monitor? as I have now changed the forum's width to 800 pixles.

The forum has changed over the past few days - it only uses up the middle 50% of the screen. I haven't changed my monitor or resolution.

It will have changed, I have set it to a fixed width rather than a percentage depending on your screen size which is how it worked before.
So is the current size readable? The more feedback I get I can then find a happy medium.

1280x1024 and looks perfect to me. I don't have my browser windows filling the monitor (I keep them to about 5/6ths of the screen width - don't ask ;) )
770px wide is good for the people who still have 'small' monitors and browser bars that might steal some width. I use 770px wide for websites, for this reason. So do a lot of commercial websites - random example www.habitat.co.uk

To be honest it now looks silly where I am sitting! Only half the browser window is being used - the rest is white space!

Interesting stats available at
this website. I've no idea how accurate they are, they could be entirely fictitious, but hey.
There seems to have been a steady and rapid decline in the number of people using 800 x 600 in the last few months - it was only 14% of users in January 2007.
I remember reading somewhere that the self-appointed website design police frown upon fixed-width designs, although probably this is largely because they all own monitors that are at least 4 feet wide.

I have put the forum back to 90% width, I have just looked at my screen resolution its 1680*1050 on a 21" monitor.
Its taking a while to get used to, but it does have its advantages.

Thanks for putting it back to 90% - much better IMO. :)
