Looking at a website today the above question was asked, one guy said its like being asked if you wanted to be shot or hanged, another said there are no nice UK cities they are all across the channel, and i must admit i have to agree with the latter coment.
I don't agree, I like Manchester a lot, the centre has a real vibrancy to it with lots of interesting little areas and new construction projects and some great 19th century architecture, the place is undergoing a real renaissance. There are some not so nice areas outside the centre but also some very attractive suburbs. Birmingham is improving too but it seems to be a few years behind Manc.
Most people who say they are both total crap probably haven't visited for 25 years if ever.
As for 'no nice UK cities', London is one of the most visited cities in the world, Edinburgh is very popular too and smaller cities such as Bath, York, Chester and Brighton are very nice places too. With the newer industrial cities like Manc, Brum, Glasgow and Leeds improving all the time I don't think the picture is that bleak at all.
I'm also going to back Manchester up. Having now lived here as a student for nearly two years it is actually a great city. Come and have a look. It has changed (and continues to change) a lot in the past 10 years. Easily the capital of the North.
