I'm a kind of expat, as I was born in Shrewsbury.
In 1951, my father moved to Shrewsbury with my mother and older sister (who was two).
As I understand it, my father was retained by someone to start some conversion work on a large old house/building called Oakley Grange (to flats?). My parents lived in part of it while my father did the work. I remember descriptions of a ballroom.
My father also built a house in Raby Crescent.
I just wondered if these names mean anything to anyone.
My sister did find the house in Raby Crescent, and apparent my father is remembered.
I found mentions of tree preservation orders around Oakley Grange on Google - so I'm assuming it's still there.
Oakley Grange was in Oakley Street,Oakley Street and Raby Crescent are the same road divided by South Hermitage.
I think that the Grange has recently had new appartments, built on land that was once occupied by the gardeners cottage.
