Title: Shipwreck

If that container ship had run aground just off Borth how many of you would have sped over there for a scrouge around?

It'd take much more than that to make me ever want to set foot in Borth again!

Same here. Now if it had run aground on the Reabrook....... :)

Knowing my luck, I'd open the container carrying asylum seekers!

It is a grim place i agree, perhaps some time in the future when global warming kicks in it will become something like San Tropez,Serious though, whats your opinion of the so called looting.

Shades of New Orleans (in reverse) - on one night it started off as 'scavenging', but by the next night's news it had become 'looting'.
To me, I'd call it 'looting' - hordes of chavs have turned up from all over the country (don't they have jobs to go to? I can't suddenly decide to have a day off from work just when I want to) when there's a chance to nick something.

I'm not meaning to kick Borth by the way, but what's heart-breaking about the place is that a site with so much potential (4 miles of sandy beaches, sand dunes, great views, interesting cliffs and quirky features such as the sunken forest, etc) has become so grim, partly because people take their holidays abroad but also because so much recent development around the place is so unsympathetic and tacky (such as the sea walls that completely block views of the sea).
Long thought that revitalising Borth would be a fascinating exercise for an ambitious town planner. However, if global warming does carry on, Borth will probably disappear beneath the waves anyway.

Going back to the original question, it put me in mind of the film "Whisky Galore"! It seems to be an archaic system whereby you can effectively loot goods washed ashore. The local police seemed to be out of their depth on this one.
If a lorry crashed on Bailey's Island and spilled it's load, of, let's say, vodka, I can't see the same thing happening.

Borth and many of the other excellent beaches in England and Wales will one day be popular tourist destinations again - a combination of a warmer climate and less air travel thanks to the depletion and therefore greater expense of fuel!
