There are a number of 2 foot high black water fountains (I think), which feature a leopard's head in gold and the inscription "Waste Not Want Not" around the town. The two I know best are on Town Walls and in Mountfields. Since they look well cared for, I presume that they are well known by the Civic Society or similar. Does anyone know more about them?
I know that there are still quite a few dotted around the town,Sundorne Road,Belle Vue etc
I think that they were used as emergency water points.
most of them had a small bowl at the base, to catch any spilt water, so that dogs could have a drink.

I think, though I could be quite wrong, that they are connected to Conduit Head in Nobold and they were the pump heads for Shrewsbury's original water supply.
Water from the wells there was pumped along wooden pipes for many years, before a mains water supply was established.
There is a campaign I think to restore condiut head and the original wells there and even perhaps restore the supply.
Thanks for the replies sgd and nickdun.
