Title: Hysteria Over Big Brother Racism

Redsquirrel - January 19, 2007 07:50 PM (GMT)
With all the serious problems there are in the world right now - this is what our media and half of the bloody nation seem to be obsessing about! I can't believe that this nonsense has dominated the news for the best part of the week.
Big Brother is trash tv at it's worst -but it can usually be avoided by simply switching over. But now you can't escape it ever since a group of nonentities had a fall out on the show.

I think Sqd what red squirrell was trying to make comparison with was all the prejudicial statements that are made often by politicians muslim fanatics and the like. It shows really the power of the media in the case of Big Brother more than anything. Muslims in particular seem to get away with abusing both childrens and womens rights, indeed human rights in general and I think that goes beyond racism.

Must have been a slow news week. No actually, what with a government adviser getting arrested, continuing news from Iraq, storms and floods all over the country, and traffic chaos in Harlescott, maybe not.

Yep TW, When it comes to burying bad news this week, Jade was the chief undertaker

Town_Walls - January 19, 2007 10:59 PM (GMT)
Until the media started screaming and shouting there was no Big Brother "racism" campaign at all - the earliest reports said that a hundred or so people had complained to Ofcom. Then the media gave it blanket coverage and unsurprisingly thousands climbed on the bandwagon. It's a first rate example of how the media manipulates the public agenda.

The most interesting aspect about all of this to me is the "burying bad news" bit of the story. Clearly someone has benefitted from this smokescreen, but who? Perhaps we'll find out more in the next few weeks.

That just about sums it up for me too RS.

Hey avron, I switched on Radio Shropshire this morning to listen to the Jim Hawkins phone-in show ..Guess what the main topic was. :(

Proud Salopian - January 20, 2007 11:19 AM (GMT)
lol - Jim Hawkins. I try not to listen to his "show".

Town_Walls - January 20, 2007 11:56 AM (GMT)
The best comment that I've seen on an internet forum (it's actually the Jade Goody forum, should you care to look) this week has been

"Why has Shilpa not apologised for 9/11?"

Please tell me that that's a send up!

To be fair though, Jimbo does talk about some juicey topics and plays devil's advocate quite well - for a BBC presenter, anyway. ;)

He has improved over the last few months, though. When he first cropped up, he was a right bloody tryant. Maybe he's been told by his boss to go a bit easier!

Who's Jim Hawkins. Is he the short podgy one we see in the shropshire star sometimes promoting good health for the BBC?

Proud Salopian - January 20, 2007 09:39 PM (GMT)
Mondays - Fridays on BBC Radio Shropshire 9-12 in the mornings.

Bit of a Guardian reading, lentil chewing, commie revolutionary wannabe.

Redsquirrel - January 20, 2007 09:58 PM (GMT)
Yep, that sounds like our Jimbo

Really? Being a Guardian reading, lentil chewing, commie revolutionary wannabe myself, I'm impressed. I also know all the words to "The Red Flag", like real ale, am fond of quiche and once had a beard.

Proud Salopian - January 22, 2007 08:00 PM (GMT)
Oh dear.

Chingwakabungya - January 22, 2007 10:44 PM (GMT)
Interesting exchange between my housemate and I this evening:

Me: You're a Guardian reader.
Him: Yeah, well, you're a Times reader.
Me: Yeah, but you're a Guardian reader.
Him: You're a Times reader.
Me: You're a Guardian reader.
Him: You're a Times reader.
Me: You're a Guardian reader.
Him: You're a Times reader.
Me: You're a Guardian reader.

Etc.

(true story)

Proud Salopian - January 22, 2007 11:27 PM (GMT)
Good going old boy!

I'm a Times reader too - though I rarely actually buy the paper. Their website though is pretty good.

I read the Times on the web as well, and the Guardian. It's a good mix. I'm a left of centre vegetarian who sups real ale as well. Never had a beard though. :D

nickdun - January 23, 2007 11:16 AM (GMT)
I won't enter the debate about how being vegetarian and a guardian reader can somehow be construed as negative, but I will enter the race row.
I do not belive Jade's comments were motivated by race, it was a class issue and she used the base line insults.
I find it extremely frustrating however that newspapers and public figures who are often anti-assylum, homophobic, anti-europe and border line racist most of the time (especially with PC gone mad stories) they could take the higher ground on this one. Glass houses and all that...
Now Shipwrecked is another story... that girl is sheltered and racist and homophobic.

Ooh I'm on a rant today.

Cloudscape - January 23, 2007 10:28 PM (GMT)
The Shipwrecked issue is being discussed all over the internet as well.

Please read this version:

While the girl's views are obnoxious (and maybe ridiculous), the point is that her viewpoint is changed by the other people on the show, who disagree with her.

Chingwakabungya - January 23, 2007 11:38 PM (GMT)
I'm a vegetarian.
I'm a Times reader.
I hate Labour (especially Blair)
Jade Goody is just plain thick (let's face it), I don't think she has a clue of anything that happens. Ever.

The girl on 'Shipwrecked' is obviously a silly little plonker but I hope this story doesn't eclipse more important issues and events- such as the recent deaths of British troops and the trial of the jihadists who took part in the failed London bomb plot.

As for the Sun newspaper laying into Jade Goody? That's rich, considering how they bullied and insulted her a few years ago. At least Jade can be forgiven to a point. When the girl wasn't being dragged up by her useless mother, she was spending time in care.
The Sun, like the rest of the trash media ,are the biggest bullies of all.

Andy Cooke - January 28, 2007 04:36 PM (GMT)
I like the pictures in the Sun !
