Title: Smoking Restrictions
Description: 2007

Proud Salopian - January 1, 2007 04:26 PM (GMT)
2007 sees a number of additional restrictions on the nasty habit of smoking:

April 1st - ban in Wales of public/work place smoking
July 1st - ban in England of public/work place smoking
October 1st - rise in minimum age of sale of tobacco from 16 to 18

All good news I say!

edit - April 2nd, not 1st

As someone who started smoking at 16 (I quit 10 years ago) I fully back the rise in minimum age of sale from 16 to 18. I'm not sure about a complete ban in pubs though.

I'm all for it. If people who smoke want to smoke and risk their health, fine. But please not in places where the smoke in the air is going to become concentrated and endanger the health of others. I don't want my health to be at risk despite the fact that I don't smoke. And it's not just health, it's enjoyment too. I really don't enjoy the smell of smoke, it's horrible. I play in snooker clubs often, due to playing in two snooker leagues, and most clubs are incredibly smoky. Believe me, it's horrible. I will so enjoy walking into clubs after April 1st. Same goes for pubs. And as for the age being raised, it's all good as long as shopkeepers stick to it, and young people stop taking up smoking. It's common sense not to start, because when you've started, it's hard to give up...

The smoking ban in Wales will begin on Monday April the 2nd I've just read. So you'll have to wait a whole day longer!

Not too bothered. I think that's during Easter anyway...

That's going to make taking the bus home from college better. I hate having to walk past a gang of bus drivers who are all smoking.

I know that some publicans think the smoking ban will hit their sales. I live across the street from a brilliant CAMRA pub that I never go into, because it is beyond smoky. The day after the smoking ban goes into the place (well, you have to give it a day for the place to air out) I will probably be a regular.

Cant wait till the ban comes into place, I am a non-smoker but sick of carrying the smell of tobacco smoke on my clothes everytime I go to any pub !
