Title: Lidl

avronb - December 15, 2006 10:23 PM (GMT)
Went to Lidl today, far superior to Netto and Aldi.

Proud Salopian - December 15, 2006 11:08 PM (GMT)
Lidl at Harlescott?

How long has it been open since?

Chris Pritchard - December 16, 2006 09:32 AM (GMT)
It opened Thursday, it was so busy that for the last two days many people have been driving in finding no spaces available and having to come back out.

Not been myself yet, but may go for a wonder around at some point.

Go in the evening its quiet then,we went 1900 hrs, they close at 2000 hrs.

Just think we could have had this store a year ago if our planning committee had a brain cell between them and although this design is good the previous architect designed proposal was better IMHO. As the Civic Society said, the prominent corner position would be visually better if the store was at the front rather than the car parking.

Starting Jan 8th, for 3 weeks, there will be no access between Harlescott Lane and Featherbed Lane, this might stop it being so busy.

It's great news, since with only Sainsburys, Asda, Morrisons, Tesco, Somerfield, several medium-sized Co-ops, Marks and Spencer, Netto and Aldi in a a town of 70,000 people, without another supermarket Shrewsbury would have been facing a serious famine.

(OK, I realise that Shrewsbury itself may not be that big but does have a huge hinterland)

Proud Salopian - December 17, 2006 05:56 PM (GMT)
Oh don't worry there won't be a famine - with Tesco's new hypermarket opening at Harlescott next year and perhaps a second Lidl in the town centre soon... ;)

avronb - December 17, 2006 06:38 PM (GMT)
The town centre realy does need a small supermarket, something along the lines of Tesco Express at Ditherington,Somerfield is too out of the way and Marks is too expensive.

Proud Salopian - December 19, 2006 06:09 PM (GMT)
Went to Lidl today - don't think it's particularly good. Was more impressed by the mass construction going on at the Tesco site!!

jonesy55 - December 21, 2006 08:59 PM (GMT)
A Waitrose is what we need now to complete the set.

Is there still a Kwik Save up in Harlescott? Not been up there for a while.

Anyway, we'd need a Budgens and a Booths for a complete set.

Chris Pritchard - December 22, 2006 09:28 AM (GMT)
There is still a Kwick Save although there's not much choice in there.

I think you would be hard pushed to do a full shop there.

Proud Salopian - December 22, 2006 07:57 PM (GMT)
Shrewsbury also does not have a McColls yet... I think.

jonesy55 - December 22, 2006 08:31 PM (GMT)
Well, if we're going to include these also rans we need a Harry Tuffins too.

avronb - December 23, 2006 11:05 AM (GMT)
I would not class Harry Tuffins an also ran, what about Stans stores, lets bring them on board too.

Proud Salopian - December 23, 2006 12:54 PM (GMT)
Harry Tuffins - making Craven Arms what it is! :D ;)

avronb - December 23, 2006 06:22 PM (GMT)
You must remember PS,this guy started from nothing,ok its not Tescos but his Churchstoke store is always popular.

Proud Salopian - December 23, 2006 08:54 PM (GMT)
I'm not dissing it - I'm quite fond on this local chain of supermarkets. It's like one of the icons of identity of South Shropshire!

Have been shopping at Lidl for a couple of weeks now,the brand names might seem strange to us,but be brave and try them, realy good tucker. The trouble with us Brits is that we are scared to break out of the HP,Heinz circle, while on holiday in Austria recently we were the only ones that selected the local dishes in the hotel, and not once were we disapointed,Bratvurst and a glass of german beer at a pavement cafe in Saltzburg sure beats that bleak expanse of nothing we call the Square in Shrewsbury,no trees, some times no seats and no atmosphere, apart from diesel fumes.

jonesy55 - January 20, 2007 12:55 PM (GMT)
Lack of outdoor eating in the UK is one of my pet hates.

I think Aldi is better than Lidl though.

Wherabouts in Austria did you go?
