Title: Shrewsbury Flood Watch/Warning

jonesy55 - December 5, 2006 11:49 PM (GMT)
It's getting pretty high now, do we predict any flooding?

Proud Salopian - December 6, 2006 12:09 AM (GMT)
Yes, but nothing major. River towpaths and some neighbouring fields may be under water. Doubt any properties will flood though.

Shrewsbury now on a flood warning.

http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/subje...loodwarning/S5S

Some of the surface car parks near the river, such as Frankwell and St. Julian's Friars, could be slightly submerged for a while. I think they will be putting up some flood barriers too to protect the new theatre site and the Guildhall.

Town_Walls - December 6, 2006 08:53 PM (GMT)
River levels have really shot up today, counted about half a dozen half submerged cars in Frankwell this evening. Some photos on the BBC website.

Proud Salopian - December 6, 2006 09:04 PM (GMT)
I love how flooding occurs every two years without fail.

1998 (Oct)
2000 (Nov and Dec)
2002 (Feb)
2004 (Mar)
2006 (Dec)

Just had a quick walk around town to see how things are looking. Victoria Avenue is now blocked for a few hundred yards underneath Kingsland Bridge and there's plenty of activity around Frankwell.

For someone that lives in a place that went more than five months without a drop of rain, I'm not envious. Hope everyone comes through OK.

Oh it's nothing serious this time round. The floods of 2000, which were rather serious, were about 1.5 metres (5 ft) higher than the current high water level.

The River Severn is now expected to peak later today at between 4.1 and 4.4 meters in Shrewsbury.

Coleham Head will be closed from 11am this morning whilst flood defences are erected and its looking like Berwick Road may be closed later today.

For the latests news and info you could always listen to the radio...

106.5 The Severn

Chingwakabungya - December 8, 2006 11:49 AM (GMT)
I'll keep an eye on it when it reaches the Severn estuary ;)

Proud Salopian - December 8, 2006 11:55 AM (GMT)
Neil - It's a shame this flooding lark didn't occur two weeks later - we could have gone on a CAS expedition to see the floods!

That's a lot higher than I was expecting! :o

In fact, they're now saying between 4.2m and 4.4m - just to remind people that the highest 2000 flood was at 5.25m so we're still a metre or so below that.

Wow, we're having the same weather you are...except for the amount of rain. Woke up this morning to 4C and light drizzle. First rain we've had in a little more than a month. It looks like you're getting a reprieve for a couple of days. Does the water normally recede quickly?

Proud Salopian - December 8, 2006 04:09 PM (GMT)
Yeah fairly quickly - usually after a peak within 2-3 days its down to reasonable levels again. Though of course this isn't always the case and if rain continues, especially up in the Welsh hills, then you can get an extended period of flooding and a second peak. This happened in 2000 (the autumn of that year was unbelievably wet) when we had two major flood peaks in Shrewsbury - one in November and again in December, with lesser flooding in between.

Town_Walls - December 8, 2006 11:02 PM (GMT)
Just seen the river level touching 4.6m at the depth bar at English Bridge.

Proud Salopian - December 9, 2006 01:46 PM (GMT)
You mean the Welsh Bridge, surely?

Proud Salopian - December 9, 2006 02:18 PM (GMT)

Oh sorry I thought Town Walls meant the measuring station thing with the graph at the Welsh Bridge.

Chris Pritchard - December 9, 2006 06:16 PM (GMT)
Coton Hill has been re-opened this evening which is good.

If you do need to go into town tomorrow then the Park and Ride service from Oxon, Shirehall and Meole Brace is free.

Few more images from this morning - there were lots of people out with cameras, but anyway, in no particular order...

Thanks for the photos. Flooding has become such a common occurance in Shrewsbury - I think people are used to it and get on with things.

Well that's Kings Head Passage and Phoenix Place flooded!

Town_Walls - December 9, 2006 10:57 PM (GMT)
I loved the number of estate agents' For Sale signs still on display around places like Marine Terrace - although I'm seriously considering buying, there are some places that I'm ruling out...

Chris Pritchard - December 9, 2006 11:08 PM (GMT)
Thanks for posting the pictures Town Walls, I've not had chance to take any this time around.

So it seems the river is dropping quite quickly.

Proud Salopian - December 10, 2006 10:05 PM (GMT)
What was the peak level at the Welsh Bridge?

edit: 9 December 2006 - 4.65m
