Title: Traffic Wardens

Ant SPCS - November 19, 2006 02:29 PM (GMT)
Does anyone know when the new Traffic Wardens will be hitting the streets? Also, do you think the penalties will be higher than before? (£10 if you settle within 14 days or £20 otherwise)

ChrisBradley - November 19, 2006 06:06 PM (GMT)
From what I've been told. It is expected that they will be on the streets by the end of November.

I have not heard anything about possible penalties or fine structure so I cannot comment on that.

Andy Cooke - November 19, 2006 06:35 PM (GMT)
They will be hitting the streets tommorrow (20/11/06)

they have been out in an advisory role but as of tomorrow I beleive that they can start issuing fines.

I think that it is about 60 pounds and 30 if paid straight away,I have heard that the fine might increase the longer that it is outstanding.

s.g.d.

Wow, that's a 300% increase. Looks like Shrewsbury is turning into a city... those are definitely city rates!

You could always, I don't know... park legally?

ThrobsBlackHat - November 20, 2006 03:55 PM (GMT)
Traffic Wardens are long overdue.

A far more important way of stopping congestion than charges IMO - make people who mess up the system liable, not people who need access to the town

Well some people think that they have the god given right to drive and park where the hell they like.

I agree. However, I have been ticketed twice in 15 years and both times it has been for exceeding the time I have paid for to park (and not by much either). I think that anyone would struggle to justify a 300% hike in fines in one step. It's greed.

correction from my earlier post.

they are starting to issue penalty charge notices(fines) from next Monday(27/11/06).

If you don't pay within 28 days the fee rises to 90 pounds.

I'm not sure that anyone unfortunate enough to get a ticket would be foolish enough to let it go past 14 days (let alone 28) and thereby pay more. However, harking back to what I was saying about greed, the jump from £60 to £90 if you go past 28 days is just robbery.

The parkrite website states that it is to cover extra admistation costs but I don't know of any kind of letter that costs £30 to send! This behavior has just been deemed to be unlawfull for banks etc.... why should this be any different?

From the Shropshire Star:

I saw four of them in Shrewsbury earlier today - I have to say I'm sick of cars littering pedestrianised/historic parts of the town.

the streets of Ludlow were unusually clear today.

Good - wasn't Ludlow recently voted the "best Town in England" or something like that? Partially because cars do not dominate there.

Chingwakabungya - November 27, 2006 10:42 PM (GMT)
I have a growing list of places where I know places to legally park free that usually have charges:
- Cardiff (well, since I live here, I have a permit, so that's kind of cheating, but even if I didn't, I still know places)
- Stafford
- Telford
- Shrewsbury
- Edinburgh
- Formerly Newport (for a brief spell when parking charges were introduced)

I think there are more, but those are the ones that have the most relevance (apart from Edinburgh which has no relevance whatsoever, and Newport which quite rightly scrapped the charges)

Chris Pritchard - November 28, 2006 08:32 PM (GMT)
12 tickets where given out in Shrewsbury yesterday, for some reason at this early stage I would have thought there would have been more!

I don't know if they visited Abbey Foregate but I did see the odd car still parking on the yellow lines near the Abbey itself.

Ant SPCS - November 28, 2006 09:21 PM (GMT)
I spotted 3 that were ticketed near Claremont Bank today. One was parked very dangerously (with half the car sticking out into the main road) so I was quite pleased to see that he/she got caught.

Looks like enforcement of English law has reached the depths of the Welsh Marches at long last! :P ;)

Chingwakabungya - November 29, 2006 09:44 AM (GMT)
I did a survey yesterday. I walked from my house down towards the City Centre and looked at each car parked on my road to see how many had parking permits. I think it was between 10 and 20%. Damn them! Here's me struggling to find a space everytime I come back from shopping or whatever, and these muppets are getting away without paying!
