Title: Looking For Any Info On The Garners.
Description: Katharn Garner
shewchuk - October 23, 2006 01:13 AM (GMT)
:)Hello everyone!
I have been researching my family history and become obsessed with a family member that I want to know more about.
Her name was Katharn Garner and she was born in 1604 in Wales (?).
In 1636 She was accused of being a witch and was tried by ordeal and put in a dunking stool, needless to say, she drowned and was found innocent.
She was given a christian burial and I am trying to find out where she is buried.
I am coming next year for a visit and I want to learn as much as I can.
I am assuming she was buried at the old St. Chads because that is where her son was christened.
I have read some postings and was amazed at the kindness shown and I was just hoping and praying that someone can point me in the right direction.
I have rambled enough for now, if there are any Garners or descendents of the Garners that would like to chat, please e-mail me at shewchuk2000@yahoo.com.
Thanks!!!

As you probably already know, Old St Chad's collapsed in 1788 and there's only a small bit left now. See my avatar for a picture of the remaining bit. There's more pictures to view
here.. When did your family leave Shrewsbury? Mine can't seem to get away - they move away sometimes, but then come back again.

hello shewchuk
welcome to the forum
was she married to Richard Garner from Stanton Lacy?

Hello, yes she was married to Richard Garner.
I know so much about him and his family and I can trace him all the way to me, but Katharn is a different story.
My main goal is to find where she was born, her maiden name and where she is buried. I have conflicting information that she was born in Wales or England. From what I can tell Shropshire is not far from Wales. If not, please forgive me.
Thank you so much for replying, I want to learn as much as I can before I visit.
Have a wonderful evening.

ID: I2094
Name: Richard GARNER
Sex: M
Birth: ABT. 1604 in Staton Lacy, Shropshire, England
Death: ABT. 1643 in VA
Marriage fact: Wilbur Garner, 3800 Elmcroft Rd., Randallstown, MD 21133-4616
Fact 2: Researched in England
Note:
Wilbur Garner says John's father is Richard and Kathern, but other sources say his parents were Thomas and Mary Lacye.
I feel that is Richard and Kathryn because of the following court records of Henrico Co.VA in 1643:
Jno. Garner to Wm. Farrar. The sum of 500 lbs. to pay for the education and to be the inheritance of my cousin John Garner, orphan, ward of William Farrar, Gent. 400 lbs being the balance owed my brother Richard Garner, for the mill and land on Wenlock Edge and the farm in Action Scott, which was our mother's dowry. The third interest in the Lion (a carriage inn at Shrewbury) was given me freely by my brother when he departed the Realm of England. Even so, for love I bear my brother and cousin, I include 100 lbs to quite title to same. (Hen. C.O.B. 1643-1644, page 23)
William Farrar sponsored both Richard and John to immigrate in 1637 to Henrico Co. VA per Ancestry.com "Virginia Immigrants, 1623-66" Where was Katharn? Was she already dead or did she come later?
Shropshire: Shrewsbury - St. Chad Parish Registers, Lichfield Diocese

The Register for the yeare following to begin at John Sponley, etc.
County: Shropshire
Country: England
02 Sep 1634 John, s. of Richard & Katharn Garner c.
I don't know much about this sorry but Berrington is a village about 5m south of Shrewsbury.
Shropshire does border Wales, about 15miles west of Shrewsbury.

Thank you so much for your information, once again I am amazed at the kindness. I have just received more information from my mother and the plot thickens. According to her Sir Robert Gosnold III & Ursula Naunton are my 12th grandparents. (that sounds weird).
I will continue my search.
I must ask you, you mention something about Berrington, is there something that I am missing? I have never heard of Berrington in my research. Please forgive my blondness. Thanks, Cindy

I don't know if this is any use:
Among the four John Garners born in 1633 England there was a John Garner who was christened 2 September, 1634 at Saint Chad, Shrewsbury, England which is in the Shropshire County. This city is in west central England near to Wales. His parents were Richard Garner and Katharn ? Of the three options I have found, I believe this option to be the most likely. There is a story on the web about Kathryn Garner being tried as a witch in Shropshire in 1636-- she was found guilty and therefore died. Richard and his young son John (3 or 4 years old at the time) left England and arrived in Henrico County, VA transported by William Farrar in 1637. [Nugent] According to the Henrico County Court Order Book for 1643/44, Richard died in 1643 and ten year old John was made a ward of William Farrar, Jr. John inherited 500 pounds, a substantial sum for that time, sent to him by his uncle John still in Shropshire. Part of the money came from the sale of the Garner's business in Shropshire, an inn. Presumably, John then migrated to Northumberland County from Henrico County 7 years later in 1650 but I still need to prove this.
this was on an old adopt-a-witch site:
Kathryn Garner " ... Welshwoman, found innocent of Witch Craft in Trial by Water. ("2 pounds for burial in Christian ground;") Shropshire, England,1636
Mary Layce Garner is sometimes mentioned as being the witch:
Mary Layce Garner - Mary was tried as a witch in Shropshire England in 1635. She was accused of being a witch & sentenced to a trial by water. She was placed in a chair & weighed down by rocks. If she survived she must be in league with the Devil & would be burned alive. She drowned prompting the Church to apologize to the family & give her a Christian burial.
I will keep searching

That is so interesting, I knew about Katharn being accused, but Mary Lacye Garner being accused as well. Unless they are one and the same.
It is one mystery after another one, that is probably why I am so intriqued with it.
I cannot wait until I can visit and see all the places I have heard about.
As always, thank you for your help. You are so kind.

Again thank you. I believe I am looking at several different Garner families and piecing them together is so difficult.
I know that Katharn excisted but I am starting to wonder if the witch thing is nothing but folklore.
I need to clear my head and start over and see if that helps.
You are so kind.

Thank you for that information. The Stanton Lacy parish registers is one that I have been wanting to see the most because that is where Richard Garner is located as being christened. I was hoping that is where I would find Katharn's burial records. I will continue to search. Thank you so much for everything. I am starting to wonder about the witch story. I know Richard did come to the states with just his son John, so not real sure what happened to Katharn and I do not think I will ever find out the truth. It would be nice if there was still garners there that are part of my family. Thanks

I know , isn't it wonderful? The reporter contacted me after seeing our postings on this forum. I also got an e-mail from BBC Radio Shropshire. She wanted to do a phone interview on the Sam Hatton Show. I haven't done that yet, because I told her I wanted to read the article first.
I would love to get a copy of the article, and I asked for one but have not gotten a response yet.
I really hope that people will read that and maybe I have some family still living there. That would be great.
