Proud Salopian - October 6, 2006 02:52 PM (GMT)
Anyone going to this year's Shrewsbury Conference?
http://www.shrewsbury.gov.uk/public/news/s...conference1.htm6:30pm at the Music Hall on Monday 30th October 2006. Free.
I've booked my place... always fun to see members of the public battle it out with councillors and civil servants in front of everyone!! :D

If it were done 'Harry Hill' fashion then I might feel it was worth bothering!
I went to the Grand Designs Exhibition at the NEC yesterday and heard Wayne Hemmingway( just been awarded the MBE for his contribution to better housing) give a talk about the terrible housing being built in Great Britain and showing us what it is like in Europe.
He was very passionate about the subject, amusing and it was a good debate. He trained as a town planner initially then went on to form his own design company 'Red or Dead' which was highly successful.
He then got interested in housing again and he's done a lot for highlighting the rubbish developers foist upon us, even taking George Wimpey on who told him to put his ideas into practice. He did so successfully and Wimpey has put more thought into some of their design, except in Shrewsbury, where quite frankly so long as it is brick and has dormers it will keep our councillors happy. :(

So... anyone else coming to the conference? Chris (Pritchard) - will Severn FM cover the event or are you leaving it to Radio Shropshire?
Chris Pritchard - October 23, 2006 04:00 PM (GMT)
I'll be attending the conference, it should be an interesting evening I have never been able to attend before.
I'll see you there Proud Salopian :)

Excellent - I've been to two before, including the very first one (gosh I was young back then!).

Did it make any difference to your life except that you are now a bit older!!!!!! :D

Well it's all part of being "in the loop" of what's going on in Shrewsbury and its council. Also some of it is useful/interesting as a town planning student.

I can't agree with you there Proud Salopian it is just a huge PR exercise IMO. ;)
BTW did you know that Galliers are in massive debt not paying some of their bills has caused trouble for other companies in the town. :o

I thought that Galliers had been bought out by a southern firm,a couple of years ago.

I didn't say it wasn't. It's a good way of getting to know more about what's happening.

Yes, I remember reading that but I think Graham Galliers retired. All these developers change their names or take on other firms names so you never know who is who.
Galliers are selling Shelton Oak Priory and I think the developer of the Limes, Cotswold country properties or something is either is part of Galliers or bought the site off them. They are so over- priced/over-dressed (negligee casually hanging over the back of a chair , double ended bath with up -lighters etc etc :D ) that the development has only sold one house.
Proud Salopian - October 31, 2006 08:15 PM (GMT)
Galliers came up on the night with Councillor Peter Nutting, our beloved Leader  , having to defend him. Apparantly Galliers owns land on the Frankwell meander and the idea of a new bridge linking Frankwell with Coton Hill could benefit him...
No wonder the River Severn as it loops around Frankwell is sometimes called "Galliers Reach"!

Well, well, well, only Shrewsbury with its £50 million quid in its back pocket (a large amount of that allocated to Theatre Severn) is going to fight the inevitable unitary authority. The others like Oswestry are conceding it will happen or sitting on the fence like Bridgnorth.
Still our incredibly wonderful council (hang on didn't that £50 million come from selling off council housing?) are going to use some of the ill-gotton dosh to help us fight it in order to prevent them losing their status quo.
Something a bit wrong about that, don't you think?
Proud Salopian - November 3, 2006 03:31 PM (GMT)
It's also people who are likely to lose their jobs if we go unitary defending the district councils - most district councillors and many district council management staff will go if the districts are to be abolished in Shropshire.
I think it will happen. Shropshire will have two unitary authority councils - Shropshire County Council and Telford & Wrekin Borough Council.
Shrewsbury will need a new Town Council set up (a parish covering the town area).

Haven't you noticed some of the councillors feathering their nests/diversifying in preparation, Proud Salopian?
Judith Williams....new council glasshouses for the Britain in Bloom.
Tudor Bebb....farm building conversions to holiday lets and now bird hides on the land.
Mansel Williams and the Abbey Railway museum enterprise.
