Title: Chuster
Town_Walls - September 5, 2006 04:59 PM (GMT)
I greatly admire the lady robot who makes the announcements at Shrewsbury station. Maybe one day she will star in a remake of Brief Encounter. However, before that happy event, I am curious to know why she pronounces Chester as 'Chuster'. Is this the correct way of saying it? Has everyone in my life been secretly conspiring to get me to say it wrong for 30 years? :o
Yours in anguish

I think it's just Chester spoken quickly?
Or is "Chuster" a posh way of saying Chester? I dunno, though I've always heard the city called Chester.

At the station this morning I listened out for a Chester announcement.
The lady says Chester, just in an unsure sort of way.

Speaking of Chester, the train there this evening was cancelled, only found out as we were waiting on the platform, and had to go outside to wait for a bus...

It's when she lists all the stations on the Heart of Wales line to Swansea, all in impeccably correct Welsh, then lists most of them again to say that they are request stops. By the time she's finished, the train is half way to Church Stretton.

I thought that Ms Sexy Announcing Lady at the station was a recorded voice - just like Mr Posh And Rather Disdainful Of All You Commuting Peasants, who makes the announcements at Birmingham New Street and frequently issues menacing directives about extinguishing all smoking materials.
I'm sorry if my comments have caused her to come over all flustered.

My favourite threat from Shrewsbury woman is:
"The riding of cycles, skateboards and rollerblades on the platform is prohibited. Offenders will be prosecuted under railway bylaw number 30"

Might be interesting to see how they would cope with someone using a pogo stick or maybe a push-scooter... are these provisioned for by bylaw 30??

Here is railway byelaw number 30...
"30. No person other than an authorised person shall ride a bicycle tricycle motorcycle or other similar machine or bring any handcart barrow or similar conveyance upon any footbridge footpath causeway or subway on the railway and made or set apart for the use or accommodation of pedestrians only. Provided that no person shall be subject to any penalty under this Byelaw unless it shall be proved to the satisfaction of the court before whom the complaint is laid that public warning has been given that the footbridge footpath causeway or subway in respect of which the complaint is made has been set apart for the use or accommodation of pedestrians only by notice clearly exhibited at the footbridge footpath causeway or subway where and at the time at which any offence under this Byelaw is alleged to have been committed."
Pogo sticks and scooters are not specifically mentioned, but they're probably covered under "other similar machine", since skateboards and rolllerblades are similarly banned. There's probably some case law somewhere ("Network Rail vs The Toxic Roadkill Skate Posse") which clarifies all of this.
Should you be interested, the rest of the byelaws are
here. I like byelaw 15 ("Infectious diseases") and byelaw 16 ("Intoxicated, unfit or unclean passengers") particularly.

That's a long walk home for The Toxic Roadkill Skate Posse then.
