Title: Another Pub Closed

Brum tiddly um tum - August 4, 2006 02:55 PM (GMT)
I doubt many will mourn the passing, but The Plough on Castle Foregate was all boarded up this morning just as the Station Hotel was too.

Proud Salopian - August 4, 2006 03:09 PM (GMT)
Not that surprising really. And no, I don't mourn their passing - they weren't good pubs.

I that it is a sad day whenever a pub closes. We are creatures of habit and like the familliarity of having a "local".

Then there are job losses, peoples livelihoods.

a boarded up building tends to attract certain people.

I think that both of these will be re-opened once new managers can be found. Both have had money spent on them in the last 18 months.

Any news on what's happening with the Buffalo? There were rumours that it may re-open, but maybe not as a "pub pub", but as a hotel or something??

"closed for refurbishment" it has been like that for a couple of years, but nothing has been touched, even the glasses are still on their shelves.

Ah...

Seriously, if I had the money I would buy the place and re-open it as a pub. :)

Being a landlord in Clun must be a pretty good life! (Although, not so economical...)

it is the Clun Valley beer festival in October so you do not have long to re-open and make a few pennies.

Yes - I think the "if I had the money" part is quite crutial here!

If only I could win the lottery... I'd start my own Clun Estate... hmmm......

Back to your dream, what would the Clun Estate look like? Like Clun New Town or Clun Garden City?

jonesy55 - August 7, 2006 08:07 AM (GMT)
People's tastes change, most of those listed were fairly grotty old men's drinking pits. There are plenty of others that have opened in the past few years like Franks, Cromwells, C21, Bellstone

Not that sort of estate! Just a portfolio of property and land in the Clun area!

Are there a lot of fairly grotty old men in Shrewsbury?

If there are, I would feel at home. :)

they are wine bars not pubs, people go to them to be seen, pubs are where you go to have a pint and a chat and maybe a pickled egg and crisps.

do you really want grotty old men like me coming there for a drink?

Cromwells has been there years,it used to be called the Warwick hotel.

People still like a drink,so WHY are so many pubs closing?

From my own perspective I'd say the fact that I can obtain my ale cheaper from a supermarket than a pub. Of course, with the lower prices I don't get all the "added value" that pubs typically provide - such as music at ear-splitting volume, surly barstaff, sour beer, reeking urinals and the possibility of chavs fighting - but, well, I suppose I can live without it.

avronb - August 9, 2006 05:38 PM (GMT)
I brew my own beer and wine, anyone else brew their own?

the new owners of the Dolphin are planning on re-opening the micro-brewery

Not neccessarily, I couldn't give a monkeys about being 'seen', you can go any of those I mentioned for a pint and a chat, they just have nicer surroundings.

I agree with you avronb, these days when the pennies count its cheaper to buy a bottle and stay at home.

I don't at the moment but i'm going to start, are there any home-brew shops in Shrewsbury??

Ant SPCS - August 18, 2006 01:57 PM (GMT)
I'm told there is a good home-brew shop in Belview.
