Title: Rumours

Is it true that eventualy the sorting office, Morris Lubricants,Kwik Fit and the bus garage will be forced to move out to make way for housing.
Proud Salopian - July 29, 2006 08:46 PM (GMT)
Not forced out by the council, but by simple economics. The land they're on is worth a lot and is prime stuff for new housing. These sorts of land uses should be on the outskirts of the town anyway.

I used to work for Morris Lub.and although they are on the ball with their fire precautions i dread to think what would happen if it was to go up.
Proud Salopian - July 29, 2006 08:54 PM (GMT)
Well, Castlefields and Ditherington (including the prison) would go, so nothing missed... ;)
Look out for the Borough Council's northern corridor study which will probably suggest a transition from other uses to residential on sites between the town centre and Heathgates roundabout.

Out of order there PS,i live in Castlefields.
Proud Salopian - July 29, 2006 09:02 PM (GMT)
Lol, okay, I was only joking. I actually like Castlefields - it feels much more like a community and "town-like" than most of the suburbs of Shrewsbury.

I bet that it would cost a lot to make the morris' site safe to build on,they had to spend a lot on the Gas works(St Michaels Gate)

Everything changes and you can see that with the retail/industrial parks that many businesses are moving out of the town centre because they know that they can sell their land and move to the outskirts where land is not only cheaper but offers larger lots and has better access.
I cannot comment on the Morris' site but I know from experience that the mail centre site would not be missed if it was announced that the building was being sold and re-located to battlefield or meole brace because it is the concensus among the staff (and local management) that the building is out of date and poorly equiped location wise to make the most of the road transport and processing logistics and was built to run around the now defunct rail network.
I have spoken to royal mail drivers from larger offices and they are suprised by how well the office runs and how efficient it is with its size and problems with access.

have they removed the bridge thing that linked the sorting office to the railway?
s.g.d.
ChrisBradley - July 29, 2006 10:32 PM (GMT)
yes, the bridge was removed a couple of years ago over a bank holiday because it had not been used for years and if i remember correctly there were a few health and safety issues with the bridge that needed to be addressed.

Some news for this area: Derfald House, Derfald Street, Shrewsbury.
http://www.shrewsbury.gov.uk/planninglist/...pNo=06/1289/DDMPlanning application submitted to redevelop existing buildings there into affordable housing.
shrewsbury.shrew - September 14, 2006 02:58 PM (GMT)
Another interesting development proposal which would also help boost the area.

I have just been to the exhibition at Morris' for their expansion plans.
I hope that they have to move the old school house and not just demolish it.
Bridge street will look much better if they get permission to expand.

That extension for Morris's headquarters on Bridge Street has been on the cards for years.
I too hope something happens - Bridge Street would look so much smarter.
