Title: What Newspapers Do You Buy?
Redsquirrel - July 24, 2006 10:17 PM (GMT)
Nosey so and so, aren't I.
Anyway here's mine - The Shrewsbury Chronicle and the Shropshire Star.
The Shropshire Star has to be one of the best local papers in the country - alot of people I know from outside the county have said that it's much better than their local rag.
I'll often quickly flip through any newspaper that's lying around in the staffroom at work - usually the Sun or the Mirror. But I haven't bought a national newspaper in about five years.
I'm a bit of a news junkie but I get pretty much all of it from the internet and t.v.

Internet, not just news sites, but also forums and blogs give you much more choice than printed newspapers - although generally if there's a breaking news story, I'll go to the BBC website as my first port of call. But it's fascinating to follow all sorts of things from different countries. The coverage in Australian newspapers of their deeply humiliating defeat in the Ashes last year was very entertaining, for example.
Other than that, I did mention on another thread that I do read a certain national newspaper that has a reputation for misprits but I had better not mention it here.
Redsquirrel - July 24, 2006 11:35 PM (GMT)
Credit where it's due -the BBC's news website is one of the best that there is.
Chris, I've just realized I've dropped a clanger - could you please move this thread to the General chat section ?- cheers

Not a problem Redsquirrel. I have moved the thread for you.
To add to the discussion I get the shropshire star delivered daily and the chronicle every-so-often but dont tend to have a great deal of time to read much in the papers.
I used to buy the times and independant whilst at university and for a couple of years afterwards but these fell by the wayside due to lack of time.
I tend to read a few online sites like bbc, slashdot etc as well as the odd forum and blog here and there.

Not squirrel porn... ;) ;)
Chingwakabungya - July 25, 2006 05:58 PM (GMT)
Well, delivered to our house are the Newport Advertiser, Stafford Newsletter, Express and Star, and Sunday Express. However, this is due to my parents, obviously. If I buy a paper, it's usually The Times or Telegraph. When at uni, I can get the now famous Gair Rhydd (after they became the only British publication to publish THAT Islamic cartoon - just after winning a "best student newspaper" award) for free...
Proud Salopian - July 25, 2006 06:35 PM (GMT)
The Times.
And very very occassionally the Chronicle.

No, Nuts magazine - and the less said about beavers the better!
avronb - July 25, 2006 09:33 PM (GMT)
Whats the problem with Beavers, they swim around in rivers building dams, faggots are tasty snacks and pussys are furry animals that are kept as pets, and to be gay means happy,am i missing out here.

Chris Pritchard - July 25, 2006 11:16 PM (GMT)
Seeing as I spend most of my time at the building in Ketley these days...
I read the Shropshire Star and the Shrewsbury Chronicle.
We don't have any other national daily papers, most of my news comes from the net as its faster!
Proud Salopian - July 26, 2006 08:08 PM (GMT)
the Clun Chronicle! where can I get hold of that (in or near Shrewsbury)?!! :o :D

Proud Salopian - July 27, 2006 08:40 PM (GMT)
Oh well, I was hoping that it might be on sale somewhere outside Clunshire - surely it's not printed down there though?
jonesy55 - July 28, 2006 07:52 AM (GMT)
Gurdian or Independent sometimes for national news but I tend to read the web more often than not.
Shropshire Star also, generally good for a local paper but the way they give room on their letters page to the same half dozen xenophobes virtually every day is ludicrous.
I bought the Chronicle while looking for a house but its mixture of 'news' about the local WI meetings and village fetes didn't particularly excite me!

See
http://www.shropshire.gov.uk/community.nsf...0256DF0003B4919Looks like the editorial work is done down in Clun. But since there are loads of printers about the place, it could be produced anywhere. Can't imagine that the circulation is particularly high.

the Clun Chronicle is prepared and printed by the editors and then duplicated by Craven Design and Print in Craven Arms.

The Sun and shropshire star
Sun exagerates everything - it's gr8 lol - i just laugh through most of it and page 3 is pretty good too :P
Minkaro - September 14, 2006 05:34 AM (GMT)
My parents buy the papers, so I don't really have too much choice in what I read, but I tend to read the Shropshire Star
shrewsbury.shrew - September 14, 2006 03:11 PM (GMT)
Whilst I read the printed version of the star I'm now finding there new website http://www.shropshirestar.co.uk very disorganised and confusing to read.
DonJames - September 27, 2006 05:22 PM (GMT)
The Shropshire Star and sometimes the Daily Telegraph.

I am sharing your problems there, it use to be a very user friendly site but now it has a very amateur look to it.

The Sun has pro wrestling on it's sports pages.
Whilst I love the WWE, I can't exactly say that the results from their shows should be next to results from the Premiership.
Maybe if they put it under entertainment?
