Title: Power Cut

Chris Pritchard - July 28, 2004 08:03 PM (GMT)
Did anyone else in Shrewsbury get effected by the short power outage this evening, we got cut off in Harlescott and I believe homes in the Meole Brace where also effected.

Does anyone know if it was a Shrewsbury wide power failure?

Speaker Mo's torchlit show in power cut

More than 50,000 homes and businesses were left without electricity after a power cut hit properties across Shrewsbury last night - and also left a former MP in the dark on stage.

Power went down at Shrewsbury Music Hall while former Cabinet minister Mo Mowlam was halfway through her show, An Audience with Mo Mowlam.

But the ex-Secretary of State for Northern Ireland refused to be fazed by the power cut and ordered Music Hall staff to fetch her a torch so she could carry on reading from her notes.

And despite having no working microphone, Dr Mowlam raised her voice so audience members at the back could hear her talk.

The power cut hit the area shortly after 8.15pm yesterday, affecting 52,000 customers.

Electricity bosses said the blackout was caused by a fault in a piece of equipment called a surge diverter at the Wear Hill substation.

We had another power cut last night, thanks to the lightning storms! Thankfully I realised during the night (I woke up and found my alarm clock flashing) and so I wasnt' late for work this morning.

The weather forecast is that of unsettled weather to continue and the outlook for August is for more hot and wet weather - ie thunder storms a plenty!

Just hearing on the radio now about the severe storms and floods which South Shropshire experienced last night. Quite a wild spell of weather we've just had!

From the Shropshire Star:

Freak storms leave region battered

Shropshire and Mid Wales were battered by some of the worst thunderstorms in years when the equivalent of a month's rainfall soaked the region in just one hour.

Lightning strikes, flash floods, power cuts and a massive mud slide which closed a main road in south Shropshire were just some of the problems caused during last night's downpours.

The storms caused havoc across the rest of Britain, with a teenage boy killed and a teenage girl badly injured after being struck by lightning.

Joseph Wharton, 14, died as he camped in his friend's back garden in Bloxwich, near Walsall.

The girl was hit by lightning in Hyde Park, London.

Locally, South Shropshire and Powys suffered the brunt of the storms, with many roads turned into raging torrents as drains were unable to cope with the rain.

The A489 between Wistanstow and Horderley, near Craven Arms, was closed by a 3ft 6ins deep mudslide.

Power cuts caused by lightning strikes hit thousands of homes and businesses in Shrewsbury, Ludlow, Market Drayton and Welshpool at the height of the storms last night.

Our power must have gone out during the night as well.

Although obviously I never noticed until this morning the alarm clock was flashing and both sky boxes had been re-set.
