Title: Battlefield Today
Description: Quick bike ride

Proud Salopian - July 12, 2006 05:34 PM (GMT)
Went for a quick bike ride today up to Battlefield. Basically my message here is that we must save this...

The first photograph shows Battlefield Church and the cottages there and is taken from underneath the railway bridge on the lane that links the church with the A49.

The second photograph shows the recent development nearby at Battlefield Roundabout (where the new livestock market and a service station, with the Two Henry's pub, has been built). Currently there's another building under construction at the service station. The roundabout you see isn't Battlefield Roundabout, but a new one further up the A49. There is now a single field between the edge of Shrewsbury and Upper Battlefield.

Halls Auctioneers, who run the livestock market, did apply for planning permission for a new auction house (to replace their existing one in Frankwell) to be built next to the livestock market. It was refused, on grounds of over-development.

As I've uploaded this to Wikipedia, I might as well link to it here too:

And here's a train heading up to Crewe on the railway line there.

I can't imagine an electrified railway in Shropshire...

Looking at the pics of Battlefield Today i feel something has now got to be done to stop any further development in this area, ortherwise Hadnall will become part of Shrewsbury, the building of new roads is just another excuse to let urban sprawl have its way.The railway seems to be part of the landscape in this picture, some thing roads will never be,building more roads will never ease congestion, they just create more in the long run,i was watching some old Sweeny videos the other day,and its only then that i realised how congested this island has become, the m1 was almost deserted and there were loads of parking spaces, this was in the 70s,can you imagine what things will be like in another 30 yrs time.

Ah but you're forgetting that oil is on its way out... ;)

avronb - July 20, 2006 12:53 PM (GMT)
I think the damage as already been done, and besides, oil wont run out for at least another 50 yrs or so,and more will be discovered in the meantime, but it wont be us causing the pollution,it will be the Chinese and India, and it wil take more than the threat of global warming to stop them wanting what we have been taking for granted for the last 50yrs.

Proud Salopian - July 20, 2006 01:55 PM (GMT)
Oil has already reached its production peak and so supply at the very best will continue at present levels for only about another 20 years before falling. Then you have the added dimension that demand for oil is going to continue to rise and rise strongly, thanks to the growth of China. So while oil may not "run out" as such, it's going to get a hell of a lot more pricey in the coming decades. Oil will "run out" in all practical means by 2030.

Time to start developing an economy that isn't dependant on oil and gas! And quick...

The French have been generating almost all their energy from nuclear for the last 50 yrs, they generate so much we buy the surplice, they dont seem to have this paranoia about it that we have, its the only way forward if we dont want to go back to the dark ages,i remember driving down to mid wales about a month ago and seeing a wind farm that was totally becalmed because there was no wind blowing,a fat lot of use that was to the national grid.

Proud Salopian - July 20, 2006 02:15 PM (GMT)
I'd rather have nuclear power stations than cover most of the UK in wind turbines (which work neither in strong winds as well as with no wind).

Or the other alternative is to stick a HUGE barrage across the Severn estuary at Bristol...

avronb - July 20, 2006 02:25 PM (GMT)
Still more harmful to the environment than nuclear Ching.

Chingwakabungya - July 20, 2006 02:33 PM (GMT)
Oh, I don't support that, it's just I had an entire module this year on energy and resources, I've had several alternatives thrown at me - this one seems the daftest...

"Let's flood Bristol"

Actually, yes, let's do it!

avronb - July 21, 2006 10:31 PM (GMT)
Whats the the problem with Bristol Ching?Whent there a few yrs ago, wanted to have a look at SS Great Britain, and the bridge, seemed an ok sort of place to me.

Chingwakabungya - July 22, 2006 09:32 AM (GMT)
I'm sure there's nothing wrong with it really, but I'm at university in Cardiff, there's something of a rivalry there.

avronb - July 22, 2006 01:07 PM (GMT)
A kind of Sbury Telford thing ?

Chingwakabungya - July 22, 2006 08:00 PM (GMT)
Yeah, that sort of thing. They aren't keen on Newport or Swansea either.

avronb - July 22, 2006 10:34 PM (GMT)
Why the hell are we so territorial,we are not talking about thousands of miles between places, but just 13 between Telford and Sbury.

Proud Salopian - July 23, 2006 10:38 AM (GMT)
Rivalry and competition are good things, so long as they don't go so far.
