There was no settlement at Ironbridge before the Iron Bridge was built there - the area was known as Madeley Wood and was within the boundaries of the town of Madeley. The gorge was known as the Severn Gorge, though it is now almost universally known as the Ironbridge Gorge.

In the Autumn, the BBC are releasing a DVD, "Mark of the Rani", a Doctor Who story from the Eighties, starring Colin Baker (not one of the best Doctors, admittedly), which was filmed at Ironbridge Gorge museum. There promises to be extra features on the DVD about Ironbridge itself.
