Title: Urals

Town_Walls - March 1, 2006 10:39 PM (GMT)
I've occasionally heard it said about various hills in Shropshire and the midlands in general something along the lines of "there's no high ground east of Hill X until you get to the Urals".

Checking in an atlas, this is probably true for any hill between the Southern Uplands of Scotland, through the Cheviots, Pennines and Peak District to the Cotswolds (although the Central Russian Uplands might get in the way).

I've heard this said of Clee Hill in Shropshire, but also Rowley Hill near Dudley and Shotover Hill near Oxford.

Is it applied to any other hills?

thought this might be of interest:

Nic Adams
Landlord, The Kremlin pub, Clee Hill village
Most of the locals in my pub are farmers, but a lot of people round here keep a few sheep - not just the farmers.

It's common land on Titterstone Clee and you need turn-out rights. I've got turn-out rights, but I don't want any sheep. I see enough in the car park, bloody things. They crap everywhere, people get it on their shoes, and they walk into the pub here and get it on the carpet.

This pub's called 'The Kremlin' because when we first come here in the late 80s, we used to get Radio Moscow coming through the jukebox when there wasn't any music playing. We also got it on the telephone and the television, beamed off the radio mast on top of the hill - because from here to the Urals there's no high ground. It was quite spooky. Then they moved the mast to the other side of the hill and we don't get it any more.

Yup the Kremlin is on my list of favourite Shropshire pubs. It's the highest one in the county too, at 391m above sea level. :)

it is only about 5metres higher than the Anchor at Anchor.

have you been to the Colliers Arms,Coreley? it is just across the A4117,quite near to the Kremlin.

No I haven't been there - when I last went to Clee Hill I went to the Kremlin.

Been to the Anchor at Anchor and am planning on going again around Easter.

We really do have some treasures in Shropshire! :D
