Did anyone see Cor St. last night,the 16th,the term 'white trash' was used by one of the actors and caused quite a stir by all accounts,as i did not see the program i would like to hear your comments on this.
I never saw the episode in question avronb (I haven't watched Corrie in years) but I'd say if the insulting term 'white trash' is used by one white person towards another white person it's derogative - nothing more.
However, a non-white person using the term, IS indeed racist -whether it's on a soap or in real life.
If the Asian Corrie charactor is actually being portrayed as an obvious racist -then I've got no complaints - because like real life, racism does exist and cuts both ways.
If the Asian charactor isn't portrayed as a racist as such - and the term was mentioned in a casual manner , then I have a MAJOR problem with this.
Can you imagine the media outcry if a white soap charactor, although never really being portrayed as a racist, was to ever use terms such as 'lazy black' or 'Asian scum'?
White trash is such an Americanised phrase! It's used in the same way as trailer trash. I never watch corrie so I think it's funny that it's crept into use. Northerners go stateside.
It's a common phrase in the US, and I've known people to be proud of the phrase, very much in the same way as people are proud to be redneck.
Eminem makes a lot of his white/trailer trash up bringing!
Speaking as a genuine redneck, yes, we are often proud of the name, even though some people take it the wrong way. They think a redneck is someone who discriminates against other cultures, relgions, etc. Not true. Rednecks are just people who grew up in the country the hard way, and have a very practical outlook on life. As fore the term white trash or trailer trash, Eminem is too young to know what those terms REALLY mean. White trash is a term left over from the civl war that referred to people who were considred lower than even the slaves. In the states both terms are considered an insult. There's no shame in being raised poor, and growing up in a trailer. I did. But buy a clue. Do you know of anyone who wants to be called trash?
