Well, I lived in Shrewsbury for 6 years. Recently moved, but fortunately my work takes me back the town once a week. In an ideal world I'd like two homes. One Ludlow, the other in Cape Town in a place called Constantia. Then I'd just flit from one to the other .................. I can dream!

In a little village or hamlet somewhere in South Shropshire would be nice...

hello Oceandco
welcome to the board.
Shrewsbury is God's country,it has just about everything that you could wish for.
it is small enough to be friendly yet big enough to be anonymous in.

Though if you can, live in Shropshire but outside the main towns of Shrewsbury and Telford. Just my preference though.
To expand on that - here's the show if you live in Shrewsbury.
Pros: Beautiful town with historic charm and little destruction from the 60s so-called "town planners". The town centre and surrounding retail parks have most of the shops and services you will need. The River Severn flows through it which makes things much more interesting and the town is laid out, both the centre and the suburbs, over rolling hills. There's a mixture of housing types and styles too. Telford, Wolverhampton and the rest of the West Midlands connurbation are close thanks to rail and road links. Otherwise the countryside of Shropshire is all around you and is visible from most houses one way or another. Nice pubs about too.
Cons: Can be quite pricey, though this is a nation-wide problem I guess. There's the occassional problem with flooding, so check out if the place you're moving to floods. The town is no good for commuting around by car, there's only some and very expensive parking around, and the public transport here is terrible (and yet expensive too). Chavs, lots of them. And the odd run-down part of town that lets us all down, like Ditherington or the bus station area.
Ideally, if you can, and I know I will try to at some point, live in a village a few miles from Shrewsbury.

Agreed with that, The Market (an eyesore), Princess House (an eyesore), the whole area around where Barcleys bank is was ripped down.
But I still like the place.

I would have to say I'd not move from Shrewsbury in a hurry, its a great little town.
We have family who live in Manchester and I'm always glad to come home, people sometimes think living in a big city there's more to do and this is not always the case.
Proud Salopian - June 16, 2006 05:14 PM (GMT)
I said "little destruction from 60s planners" - compared to other towns around Britain, we've fared quite well!!
re: Clun - yes, I love Clunshire and would happily live the rest of my life in its county town Clun... but then, I am mad, maaaaad I tell you!
*ahem*

London or Berlin... I crave city life. If I were to live abroad, I think it'd have to be somewhere I can speak the language - and that'd be in Germany, Austria or Switzerland.
Proud Salopian - June 17, 2006 12:36 PM (GMT)
Switzerland is very pricey - as is London. You get for what you pay for though!
jonesy55 - June 17, 2006 03:46 PM (GMT)
I think Shrewsbury almost as good as it gets in the UK unless you really want big city life and all it entails.
I'd like to move to Slovenia if anywhere, beautiful scenery and towns, friendly and relaxed, clean, low crime, cheap living, good skiing on the doorstep and not a long drive to the beaches of Croatia or the sophistication of Venice or Trieste. I could just see myself with a nice big house in the hills with a vineyard (all for the price of a standard Shrewsbury 2 bed terrace!)

The Market Hall and its clock tower isn't actually that bad - the main problem is that it is way over-sized for Shrewsbury. I think it wouldn't look that out of place in a larger town/city somewhere in England.
Princess House is a disaster. The quicker they replace it the better. And while they're at it they can re-instate Phillip's Passage between High Street and Princess Street. Who ever approved the demolition of the old Shire Hall (a grand, old building) and approved the construction of Princess House needs shooting, though I suspect he/she is already dead.

Welcome to the forum Subzero...
Good luck on your move back to Shrewsbury I'm sure its the right thing to do :)

It never ceases to amaze me why London is such a magnet for tourists.
jonesy55 - July 11, 2006 08:34 PM (GMT)
I always like to visit London, there's so much to see and do. But I wouldn't want to live there.
Mark - July 11, 2006 09:25 PM (GMT)
Now that I live in an EXTREMELY isolated place, I would never live in a big city again. Perhaps when I get older and need decent health care, I'll change my mind. Colorado or northern New Mexico would be beautiful, but it's a bit pricy. I really liked Shrewsbury years ago and the lifestyle there. I'd like to try Shrewsbury for a few years. However, if I get a chance to accept a detail in my line of work it would be either Southampton, Felixstowe, London, or Liverpool. Scotland would intrigue my wife, but never been there.
Chingwakabungya - July 12, 2006 11:44 PM (GMT)
After living in Cardiff for the past 8 months I now know that my place is in the country. I can't do with lights outside my window, and there being activity otuside at night...
As for living in Shrewsbury, I doubt I'll ever be living there, I'm very happy living in rural Staffordshire, and goodness knows where I'll end up after University...
Proud Salopian - July 13, 2006 09:36 AM (GMT)
On an oil exploration rig in the middle of Alaska or the Falklands Sea? :P
Chingwakabungya - July 13, 2006 09:26 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I'll find you some oil :D
Redsquirrel - July 21, 2006 10:29 PM (GMT)
I don't think that I could ever leave old Blighty for good -but if there's anywhere else in the UK that I could happily settle -then I'd have to choose somewhere just over the border in Mid Wales -or Herefordshire perhaps.
Adventurous, aren't I :)
avronb - July 21, 2006 10:37 PM (GMT)
There is no escape for you Tommy, you are needed here.

Hey, did that video I sent you the other night make you jump? I nearly hit the ceiling when I first saw it!
avronb - July 21, 2006 10:58 PM (GMT)
The brother in law sent me something similar,so i was kind of ready for it,good try though R.S.
Redsquirrel - July 21, 2006 11:11 PM (GMT)
I'll get you next time - I'll admit I'm a bit of a sucker when it comes to practical jokes or a prank -but that said, I'm pretty good at dishing them out too.
For some reason either my dad or father-in-law usually end up on the receiving end of them.
I'm not bad at putting on accents - A while back, over the phone, I convinced my father in law that I was a Romanian priest and I'd phoned to tell him that I was overjoyed to hear that he'd been recomended by his local church to take in a family of Romanian gypsies - who'll be arriving at his home in an hours time.
The bloke fell for it hook, line and sinker -talk about blind panic!
avronb - July 22, 2006 09:04 AM (GMT)
Its a joke now, give it time and it could become reality.
