Shuts of Shrewsbury No 25 -
Phoenix PlaceRoushill - MardolAlso known as
Phoenix Passage and previously known as
Mason's Passage and earlier still as
Shackleton's Passage. Despite being a public thoroughfare for at least three centuries and despite being on just about every street map of Shrewsbury, the county council don't give it any formal recognition. Which is why most of it is a dirt track, highly unusual considering it's in the middle of a town centre and as far as I know the last unpaved thoroughfare in Shrewsbury! But don't be alarmed - it's a well used and open route.
Here we see the entrance from the bottom of Roushill. On the left is the new tall residential/retail development that is “Nexus”. The passage is open despite the building work, but be a little extra careful. On the right is the well known local and ancient hardware store, “C R Birch and Son”.

Go down the lane and it will turn left. The new car park (residents' only) will be on the left, though the wall will be restored to seperate the passage from the car park. Phoenix Place floods when the Severn does and floods easily as it is low lying and has a sandy base.

Carry on and it will now turn right. Here the lane opens up and the area is used as a car park for local firms.

The more well known passage section of this route is ahead. This section, on the Mardol end, was recently paved and restored with the help of the borough council (who recognise the shut as existing). The architecture is charming in the passage section of Phoenix Place - take a look around you.

And we end up on Mardol. The entrance to
Mardol Gardens is just to the right of the photo (on the left as you exit Phoenix Place).
