Shuts of Shrewsbury No 15 -
Wine Merchants' PassageWyle Cop - NCP - River SevernOkay, not really a passage or a shut, but a very useful shortcut in the town centre, linking Wyle Cop with the back of the NCP Wyle Cop car park and then also the River Severn towpath. I call it Wine Merchants' Passage for fairly obvious reasons, namely it runs through Tanners Wine Merchants' land for much of the route. The full length of the route is only open when both the wine shop is open and the car park is too. We start on the bottom of Wyle Cop, opposite the Corn Exchange.

This black and white building, now occupied by Tanners Wine, used to be the Unicorn Hotel. Go through the archway and into the court.

At the end of this court area, on the left, is the Tanners Wine yard entrance - this may be shut and if so you can't continue. Otherwise carry on, the nice people at the wine shop don't mind people walking through! This is the view looking towards the river:

And turning round, this is the view looking towards Wyle Cop:

At the bottom of this yard, in the right hand corner, there is a little staircase leading down and then through a door. All very strange to the newcomer, but you're alright! On the other side of the doorway is the NCP car park.

This part of the car park was once a bowling green and gardens, but during the 20th Century commercialism got the better of this once very green and pleasant area. Now the council are thinking of turning this end multi-storey to add parking spaces to the town centre!

The last photo shows the final section of the path leading down to the river towpath. A useful shortcut for those parking at the car park wanting to cut the corner and go into town. Tanners Wine also get a bit extra trade with all the people walking through their yard, though be careful and watch out for their lorries. The route also crosses a traffic spot in the car park area too.
