Shuts of Shrewsbury No 13 -
Compasses PassageWyle Cop - Belmont BankThis has to be one of the best examples of a Shrewsbury shut. It's long and fairly narrow and on each end the passage entrances are arched doorways. The Wyle Cop end is commercial, while the Belmont Bank end is residential. The passage cuts through gardens and yards and passes the back of the Old Lion Tap pub (which is on Barracks Passage).
We start on Wyle Cop as usual and the passage is the opening on the right of the photograph, to the left of Henry Tudor House.

The shut on the left of the photograph is Bowdler's Passage. Despite the two passages starting near one another, they take completely different routes. Compasses Passage goes straight on, to Belmont Bank and emerges amongst some terraced houses there.

The passage is named after the Compasses Inn which was located on Wyle Cop. At the bottom of Belmont Bank is where Town Walls meets Beeches Lane.
