Shuts of Shrewsbury No 11 - Lion Hotel Passage

Wyle Cop - Belmont Bank

The first of four passages on this side of Wyle Cop (ie. the right hand side as you walk down). Three quarters of this route is a car park, but the section closest to Wyle Cop is a proper passage with small shops. Quite possibly also known as "Lion Hotel Court".

We start on the top of Wyle Cop, opposite where Dogpole joins it. The passage has no name, the address for the businesses there is simply Wyle Cop, but it's part of the Lion Hotel site.

An antiques shop, Wyle Cop Antiques, is located on the other side of the passage. Some furniture was found outside in the passage when I was there taking these photos.

To carry on to Belmont Bank you have to cross a car park. When coming the other way, from Belmont Bank, this is the car park you want to get to the passage and then onto Wyle Cop. It is, rather confusingly, the car park for the Prince Rupert hotel (located on St. Alkmund's Place) and not the Lion Hotel!

A handy shortcut and one overlooked by many, who use Barracks Passage to get to Belmont Bank instead.

Note - not to be confused with The Lion Garage, which is a little further down the hill than this car park and passage.

During our recent broadcast our studio's where in the room directly above that passage you can see the window in picture two.

Looking from the Wyle Cop direction to the left of the passage is the door to the building where we based ourselves in during April. To walk up the rather grand staircase is unbelievable as the whole building is/was subsiding so you lean as you walk, it took some getting used to.

It was easy to sit on a chair and roll across the floor without moving :)

Shrewsbury has some amazing buildings that are hidden away I'd never have guessed what was above those shops or what could be accessed from that passage. The antique place located there is also a hidden gem!

Everything is wonky is this part of town - look at the first photograph! Street signs, people, the street, the buildings, even the shut goes at an odd angle from the street.
