Title: Webhosting
Description: does anyone know any good ones
ChrisBradley - February 21, 2005 05:59 PM (GMT)
I am looking at setting up a website using
Wordpress 1.5 which requires PHP 4.1+ , MySQL 3.23.23+ and the mod_rewrite Apache module
all of which my ISP (Tiscali) doesnt support and having asked them, they couldnt care less about so I am looking for a decent site host that does. Can anyone recommend anyone?

Update:
I have decided to sign up with
Bluehost based on the recommendation of a friend who uses them. So far so good.

1 and 1 are great hosts (sry for late reply)

I was reffered to them by chris pritchard who uses 1 and 1 but when comparing features and price to bluehost and what with both being highly recommended by friends, I went for bluehost over 1 and 1 on the basis of features, it turns out that because of the exchange rate, two years hosting from bluehost only cost me £86

1&1 host Shrewsbury Guide no problems so far, I'd recommend
1&1 to anyone.
The only problem being not knowing how to claim my free domain name they don't make it very clear.

its best not to take up the free domain offer because if you decide to move hosts then there are often problems transferring domains registered by the hosts so its best to buy a domain and transfer the dns over to your host but keep the registration with another company as I know you have done with SGuide and this forum.
I can get a free .com but I too didnt take up the offer and just transferred the dns of one of my existing domain names to bluehost.
It saves a lot of hassel when you are not tied into the hosting because of the domain name registration.

I recently got fed up with plusnet for my website and moved to bluehost. Most of my visitors are americans so it made some sense to go with an american hosting company, but it turns out it actually runs faster from me here as well. Not had any down time, have a phpbb board running using a MySQL database, and a php portal system. The package they run allows you to have something like 50 (!) MySql databases, and an unusually large bandwidth allowance (100Gb/month or thereabouts iirc).
edit: whoops should have finished the rest of the rest of the thread before replying. Looks as if you are there already :)

Hi Kiaora
I had noticed that the bluehost servers are pretty fast and they do allow me to edit my error pages which is good for design purposes but I've not had time to make custom pages yet.
If you are interested; my site is online as a work in progress at
OptikFraction with some of the pictures still having provisional titles and the site code is still being tweaked for cross-browser standards.
I plan to add more content when I get around to going through my photo archive on the laptop and will (weather permitting) be taking more pictures this weekend.

nice work on there! I strongly suggest you get a copyright notice on there soon though!

Thank you for your postive comments Kiaora; I have added a copyright notice now, I knew that I had left something out. Normally its one of the first things that I place on my websites.
