Title: Raven Meadow Bus Station
Description: where you are made to feel welcome

| Welcome to Raven Meadows Bus Station. For your own and others' safety, please do not smoke (Pause), drop litter (Pause) or enter the bus manoeuvring area. Thank you. |
This recorded message is played every five minutes at the Bus Station. For added effect it is spoken by some bossy young woman through a cheap and crackly microphone, with an up-and-down intonation in her voice to ensure maximum irritation.
Why? Does anyone seriously believe that yobs will be put off from their life of yobbery (smoking, littering, entering bus manoeuvring areas) by the stern voice of mummy?
OK I do accept that the managers of the Bus Station might be covering themselves in case someone inadvertently walks into the bus manoeuvring area, is hit by a bus, then makes a legal claim they had not been told that it could be dangerous place to be. But surely there has to be a better way than this?
Anyway, at least when there are announcements at the station, some of them feature the magic and mysterious formula "You may be prosecuted under Railway Bylaw number thirty".

The one place no one wants to hang around outside are those toilets in the bus station.TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY is one tune they could play on the tannoy, any more suggestions?

I think it is time for a major makeover of this bus station.
Way past its use by date!

My understanding is that it isn't a good idea to hang around any of the toilets in the town centre.
Anyway, bossy intercom woman appears to have gone quiet at the Bus Station. I haven't yet noticed any mass trespass into the bus manoeuvring areas, or any other sign of the impending collapse of civilisation. Things are looking up.
Pity then that it seems that someone has rounded up so many of Shropshire's village idiots and given them customer-facing roles at the railway station.

I think we have had this topic before. Does anyone actually use the bus station or indeed hang around outside toilets on here? CPO's who seem to be hardly seen in Shrewsbury's trouble spots need to be used more effectively. Also the government ask us to use Public transport from what I am told this can be sometimes quite dangerous. Arriva should tackle the problem they are creating indirectly.
Lets all go back in time!

Shrewsbury Bus station is a dreadful place, only matched by the poor quality of the Bus service.
I often wait for the S1 service, due to leave at 18.00 and 18.15, which usually doesn't turn up, so the passengers are left waiting in the cold until the next bus at 18.45.
Having talked to several drivers, I have discovered the following. Apparently if the busses are running late due to the current diversions, the drivers will still always rigidly stick to their allotted break periods. So if a bus arrives late, and the driver is in risk of missing his break, he will abandon the next outgoing service and take his break, thus leave the passenger stranded.
That's what ya call call customer service folks!!

Well, it's not the driver's fault if the bus gets caught in traffic, and I hardly think that he or she should miss out on a break because of it. When else can drivers use the toilet in the middle of a shift? There are statutory guidelines setting out the minimum breaks that all workers are entitled to, after all.
The problem is due to Arriva for penny pinching, creating very tight timetables, and not employing enough drivers. Have you seen the abortion they have made of Chester station?
But when you own a private monopoly over the buses and the trains over much of the county, what incentive is there to provide better services? Odd then that Arriva is such
a major contributor to the Taxpayers' Alliance when the quality of their services seems to be inversely related to the amount of public subsidy which gets shovelled in their direction each year.

I can't find many photos of it -
this photo shows part of it. While some things they have done needed doing (like making the gents' toilets less unpleasant), they've installed a great big angular-shaped turquoise pavillion above the booking office and buffet and a load of those horrible ticket barriers.
Unfortunately most of the rest of the station still looks like it's about to fall down.
The overall impression is of some unsuccessful corporate rebranding exercise which has run out of cash.

Sadly, as a security officer for The Darwin Shopping Centre, we have to deal with the low life scum that congregates outside, inevitably they come in and we have the unfortunate task of removing them. I have noticed that security employed by Arriva (KS) spend more time smoking and chatting with the kids, rather than properly patrolling the bus station. The scum are intimidating and they know it, and relish in the fact that they are 'Untouchable' fortunately the Police (not CSO'S) can issue a 'Direction To Leave' order, but how often do we see a police officer in the town ?

I thought any form of life were allowed in the Darwin Centre. CSO's are supposed to be the 'eyes and ears' for the Police and can report incidents on by radio. I would have thought it would be beneficial if you could at the Darwin Centre get some CCTV footage of what you call 'low life scum' They are only untouchable until they break the law surely then this becomes a police issue? Are they breaking the law? Do your bosses know you refer to any members of the public as 'low life scum' also?

Why cant more stations get the 'St Pancras' treatment?Aberystwyth has had this treatment and has now got a smart station ,cafe and Weatherspoons pub all under one roof, with the exception of B.ham New St. most stations have great facades .

I realise that! My question was are we talking train or bus stations there is a difference! <_<
Proud Salopian - February 4, 2010 09:36 PM (GMT)
Arriva don't own the railway stations either - Network Rail do. All Arriva do is put a bit of turquoise on the place name signs on the platforms.
The improvements to stations, such as at Aberystwyth and even at Shrewsbury, are largely a result of the Welsh Assembly's involvement and financing!

Yes, but Arriva is responsible for running Shrewsbury train station. It's seems to be some sort of leasing deal. Wellington station is under the control of London Midland. Sadly.
