Title: Ditherington Housing

avronb - May 19, 2008 06:38 PM (GMT)
I heard this morning that the old MEB development is going to be put on hold because of falling demand for housing,i wonder how long the waiting list is for a house in Shrewsbury is these days.

Yes, the developers Persimmon Homes have also shelved plans to build in Bridgnorth and Lawley. The Spring Gardens site has been earmarked for development for years. There are some 188 homes planned with over 60 being "affordable" whatever that means.

Shropshire Homes pseudo Victorian coach house style development ( which included affordable housing) on the railway shelving by the Betton Street bridge is trickling along at snails pace.
Nobody can sell anything new at the moment, the Moreton Point and Belan Cottages developments remain unsold. A window of Moreton Point has been smashed too.

It's a real pity as that corner plot where comet cars used to be is for sale, but I shouldn't imagine anyone will be interested (next to the Two Ronnies) Developing that corner would have really lifted Old Coleham.

Give it a year and things will be back on their feet again.

Given that the council have several million pounds ear-marked for affordable housing, might this not be a good time to snap up some of these empty new homes that the builders can't sell?

I had wondered what was going on as nothing much has happened on the site recently.

So what happens now? I guess the area stays looking a scene from WWI with its giant mud trenches :)

Well, it's just economics. The housing market will pick up again, probably Spring 2009. Hopefully we won't have another boom like what we've just had... but then, this is Britain and housing booms (and busts) are like the tides.

Has the flax mill ground to a halt too?

Proud Salopian - May 22, 2008 10:53 AM (GMT)
Did it ever start..? ;)

''Ever the optimist'' , come on David, thats a bit negative! I dont think persimmon would ever get anything like the conversion of the Flax Mill, there used to ruining most towns in the country with identically looking small toy town houses IMO. 'Urban Splash' are the company renovating the flaxmill. I doubt it will be put on hold it is on the 'danger' list for listed buildings uk.
