Parents 'must tackle' child crime

Parents are being urged to take better control after figures revealed children as young as four were involved in house-breaking and petty assault.Last year's figures across Scotland showed children as young as two were caught engaged in criminal activities.The Scottish Government said the root causes of crimes needed to be tackled, including deprivation The latest figures compiled by Grampian Police show that during a single year nearly 10,000 crimes were committed by children under 18.
Perhaps the most striking group were those aged under eight - where 49 offences were committed.The children cannot be identified, but they include a four-year-old accused of house-breaking, a five-year-old caught shoplifting and another house-breaker, aged five. There were 26 cases of vandalism among the under-eights.Police have called on parents to take more responsibility for their children.The Scottish Government has said it was determined to stop young people getting involved in crime.It has called on parents to acknowledge their responsibilities to teach young people right from wrong.

The problem it seems is these so called parents must know what their offspring are doing especially at such a young age. You would wonder if these so called parents will be able to even define right from wrong anyway. I think another problem is people in general like ourselves do little other than just rant.

How much further can this country slide down the pan?

It will slide down the pan avronb unless likemined people try to build the spirit back into the community I feel. When I was a lad I knew everyone in my street, all the families. The retribution if I did something wrong was from the whole community. Community spirit is dead and it needs reviving quickly before anarchy takes over

As long as they dont go outside to confront them,then it could be three dead men make a good street.

So avronb as a scenario a brick thrown by a group of yobs comes through your window, what do you do, hide in your bedroom, the police wouldnt get there too quickly if at all? Strength is in numbers, these yobs hang around in groups. If the community stood up against them they would have to back-down and even bigger strength, if you hide behind a bushel it wont go away

Sounds good in theory, Andy - but as you've said, communty spirit seems to be dead these days or at least not as strong as it used to be.

So what's the solution- Maybe starting some kind of footpatrol, perhaps? Of course you'd have to be careful that this course of action didn't backfire. I wonder how many people would be willing to participate?

This is soft touch UK Mark,if you tried that course of action it would be you who ends up behind bars.There is a cancer eating away at this country and the government is in remission,watched a good documentry on tv last night by one of your country men about a working mens club in Bradford,it just about sums up the way things are here.

Yes, I understand there are some differences, some for better, others for worse. I'd still like to transfer over there for a few years, although at this point of my life, it's not that feasible. What was the documentary about?

Click on BBC 'White' and watch the clip 'Last Orders',there are also clips about other issues that are concerning people just now.The one that grips me big time is members of our armed forces being spat on and verbally abused in the streets here in the uk by certain sectors of the community who shall remain nameless for now,if i go on too long this post will not be allowed,free speech is not allowed in public here any more.

I missed last night's programme, Avron but I've been told it was a bit of an eye-opener. Shrewsbury folk are fortunate enough to live in a town that has never experienced the same 'cultural enrichment' as Peterborough, Birmingham, Bradford, etc.
But I'm sure that in the coming years (with the help of government social engineering programmes) we too will be celebrating the 'wonders of diversity'. :rolleyes:
