Title: Heaths Houses (old Folks Home)
Description: What was there before???

Hello there,

I have the pleasure of living opposite Heaths Houses on Abbey Foregate and was wondering if anyone knew what existed there before they built them in the 60s/70s?

This is a huge site on Abbey Foregate so must've had some substantial building(s) there initially?

Can always find old photos of the other side of Abbey Foregate but very few of this side of the road and area?

Also, where Belgravia Court currently stands used to be the old Charles Lewis's Garage, however there must've been a large house here before that? The building to the left of Belgravia Court has a visible silhouette of a large house on its right wall.

Any info would be fantastic!

Thanks

Simon

Welcome to the Forum.

I have quite a few books with old photos of Shrewsbury but I haven't had much luck so far. One of the properties demolished in 1966 by the Council to make way for the flats I think was a newsagents run by Fred Jones. The building was dated 1731 and had interesting window mouldings apparently. Still looking but I'm sure I can remember reading something about the history of Charles Lewis's Garage. It was called Belgravia House I seem to remember which must be where the name Belgravia Court comes from.

Thanks very much for your reply!

This seems to be an area missed by photographers of that era as I'm yet to find any old pics.

Have seen pictures of the Dun Cow with the wonderful warehouse to its left which was obviously knocked down to build Kwik Fit (!?!?), and have also seen photos of the old houses at the top of Mill Lane (knocked down many years ago and only recently had offices built on the site) but nothing in between.

Will continue looking too!

Thanks again.

Simon
