Title: Best Walking Route

schizoidgal - November 20, 2007 12:17 PM (GMT)
Hi,

My husband will be walking from The Farthings each morning to the train station.

We have been studying the map but, unfortunately, these things don't show up pedestrian cut throughs.

He thinks he will take the walkway over Rea Brook which leads from Sutton Road to pritchard Way but from there it looks like he has to negotiate his way through a housing estate.
Can he cut through from Sutton Lane onto Betton Street directly or does he have to go a long way round?

Can you cross the Severn at St Julians Friars rather than the Wyle Cop?

Can he access the train station from the path that leads alongside the Severn?

Thanks for your help,
Schizoidgal.

Well there are two ways over the Rea Brook from the housing estate you live in - one path follows the old Bridgnorth railway line and goes from Sutton Road itself, towards the Darwin public house. The other leads from Laundry Lane (I think this is the one you mean). Both end up at the Sutton Lane/Park housing estate. The shorter route is the one that leads from Laundry Lane and I believe it goes under Pritchard Way too, saving crossing that road.

You can cross over the railway line (at Sutton Bridge Junction) between Sutton Lane/Scott Street and Betton Street. It was once a road, but has been pedestrianised. You'll see what I mean when you're there.

At the bottom of Betton Street you'll be in Coleham. From here you can cut through Egland Lane (a shut*) and find yourself on Longden Coleham. From here you can cross the river at Greyfriars' Bridge (when exiting Egland Lane, turn left), which takes you over to the town centre at St Julian's Friars.

Easy! :D

*shuts are passages in Shrewsbury which cut from one street to another. Egland Lane has a pub on either end (one on Belle Vue Road and another on Longden Coleham). More info about this shut can be found here -

(scroll about a third down the page for Egland Lane) :)

re: accessing the train station.

Sadly in this day and age (it was different in the past) you can only access the station from the front. It is possible to go along the Severn to the Dana Steps and then go over The Dana footbridge, but it's probably too much of a hassle.

From St Julian's Friars, head up Wyle Cop then Dogpole and cut round the back of St Mary's Church to Windsor Place and then Castle Street. It's then just a case of walking down Castle Gates to the station.

We didn't know that you could cross the Rea at the bottom of Laundry Lane and, as we will be living about halfway along Tudor Road, this will be perfect. Even that will save hubby a little bit of time in the mornings.

Thank you.

The path leads from about half way down Laundry Lane on the right, over the Rea Brook and under Pritchard Way, to the corner of Reabrook Avenue/Grove Road. It's then a matter of finding the quickest way through the housing estate(s) there to the Betton Road!

You'll soon be exploring the endless passages, paths, shuts, etc of Shrewsbury! They really are endless...
