Title: New Unitary Authority - Name?
Description: Shropshire Council?
Proud Salopian - November 8, 2007 10:43 AM (GMT)
The new Unitary Authority shown as 1; Telford & Wrekin shown as 2As the new Unitary Authority (which is now most likely going to be set up) will only cover part (though most) of the county - see above - what name should it have?
"Shropshire Council" is clearly the obvious choice (it can't be "County Council" as it won't technically be a County Council and anyway it doesn't cover the whole county) though some would argue that it should be something different to differentiate between the county as a whole and the smaller unitary authority area.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/shropshire/7084017.stmOf course all of this will not be a problem when Telford & Wrekin is one day annexed... ;)

We could end up with something catchy along the lines of 'Bath and North East Somerset' (perhaps 'The County of North, West and South Shropshire'). Or we could have a sort of hybrid name like Shepway Council in Kent or Wychavon in Worcestershire - perhaps 'The County of Oswestshrewbridglow'.
Alternatively, we could be annexed by Wales, and end up as the East Riding of Powys.

There's no Clun either. I thought both towns were far too insignificant.
I'm wondering about splitting rump-Shropshire down the middle, so that the interesting hilly bits to the south go to Herefordshire and the boring flat muddy bits to the north become part of Cheshire. After all, a large chunk of Berkshire suddenly became part of Oxfordshire in the 1970s, so really anything could happen.

:o
Your anti-Shropshire dissent Town Walls has not gone unnoticed! Your name shall also go on ze list!! :P

Reverting to "Salop Council" would keep those of us with a historical bent quiet :)
Or, alternatively, "NotTheWrekin Council"?

How about SWOT Council?
(Shropshire WithOut Telford)

I read in the Chronicle that our MP believes that there should be a reference to Shrewsbury in the new name as it is the most important town in the whole of Shropshire.
Proud Salopian - November 16, 2007 02:01 AM (GMT)
Thing is Shrewsbury is the county town of Shropshire anyway, so if the unitary authority is called "Shropshire" then people are going to know that Shrewsbury is part of it.

Reading the comment that Shrewsbury was the most important town in Shropshire, it struck me that that seems to sum up Shrewsbury's stance on the unitary debate - shades of us and them, we are special and don't want to associate with the others. As regards a name for the new authority, what's wrong with just calling it Shropshire Council?

As an 'outsider' I think Shrewsbury has an important place in the unitary debate but it needs to deal with its snobby attitudes and Nimbyism to represent a more powerful place in our county

Shropshire Star article"Shropshire Council" it is.

There's a relief. And we're even going to get a new logo for the Shropshire 'brand', thus creating more jobs for designers - I'm all for it. Traditionalists will be wanting something with the loggerheads on, but what other sort of logo could we have?
Torbay - simple and to the point. Must have cost about 57p to develop.

Alternatively, a logo featuring some local feature, like Coventry and Lady Godiva

Or Herefordshire and a shiny apple (with an odd reflection thing going on)

Or Powys and a red kite, I quite like this idea!

Perhaps a pun on the name of the place - like Oxford, and its logo showing an ox crossing a ford

But please not something truly bizarre like this one from Stoke-on-Trent. I presume that the circles are meant to represent (in an abstract sort of way) the Six Towns, and to make the place seem fresh, exciting and modern, which must create huge disappointment among visitors when they actually get to the place.

Similarly nothing please as dire as this effort to do something with the letters T and W, as Telford and Wrekin have done.

Finally, does this say Devon to you?

It should definitely include the loggerheads somehow, but this being 21st Century Britain where tradition is NOT allowed under any circumstance unless it involves lots of tourists paying money in an organised tourist trap, they will probably not involve them.
It is more likely however that the new Shrewsbury Town Council will use the loggerheads. If they don't I will be seriously cross.

The local elections have now been postponed until next year. This means that all those councillors who's terms were due to expire this May, will now be given another year in office without no mandate whatsever from the local electorate.
Good eh!
Proud Salopian - March 9, 2008 11:50 AM (GMT)
Yes, but also it does save money by not having a pointless election - those who would have been elected this May would have served only until the end of next March. Pretty pointless therefore running a (unbelievably costly) borough election!

Anything is better that the nonsensical 'West Midlands' regional label given to us Salopians by TV stations, postal surveys, delivery organisations and many others, which makes no sense to me. Perhaps they could come up with something truly distinctive which would give this part of the country a proper identity.
