Title: Wemophobia
Town_Walls - October 12, 2007 10:22 PM (GMT)
I think Wem's OK really, but going by postings over the last year, I suspect that I'm in a minority in this forum. What's wrong with Wem?

Wem is a small town with a long history. A bit like Bishops Castle I suppose. North Shropshire District Council chose to build their HQ in the town. It has a railway station and it's not too far from Shrewsbury. There's an annual sweet pea festival. Seems to be a quiet ok place to live from what I've seen and they have the treacle mines.

I think Wem is okay, the late Peter Jones (actor) was from Wem. Roy Wood from Wizard (pop group) used to live in Wem. Its a sleepy town but has character

Strange little town. Spent some time there when I briefly worked at NSDC. Needs a bypass.

Being a small, sleepy town isn't necessarily a problem though... Clun's my favourite town in the world for instance! :P

I used to commute there, and spent 13 months regretting it. I suppose what I don't like about it is that all the people I knew there were parochial and smallminded, with a lot of hoodies and shellsuited folk who thought it was cool to hang around in the "supermarket" car park (I use quotes because it's not that super). It just never had the kind of quirkiness I associate with most places in Shropshire, each of which have their own identity; Wem is more like a giant council estate these days, using the term in its cliched police-rioting sense.
Not that I've fulminated on this topic before or anything. :)

I did find that chav activity was rife in the park by the station.

I think really TW there is a bit of snobbiness here more than anything and lack of community building. Where you live is what you make it I feel you are after all part of the community. Shrewsbury for example still cant seem to accept the welsh, big issue sellers, and the like, its full of NIMBY's
