Subterranea BritannicaDoing a search for locations in Shropshire brings up Criggion, which I'm pretty certain isn't actually in Shropshire, so we have nothing to offer the history of underground activity in this country...or do we? After all, people lived in caves in Bridgnorth until 1974 or thereabouts, and I'm pretty sure there's still some underground space on Prees Heath where the airbase used to be.
Anyone know other subterranean places around here?
Try the forums at
http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/index.php and do a search for Shropshire or Shrewsbury. They have a policy of not naming names when it comes to sites they've explored, but the places around Shrewsbury are all pretty easy to work out.
There was something about ROC posts (mostly around Ironbridge) on Midlands Today a few days ago.

For natural caves etc there is a book called something like Underground places of Shropshire or Subterranean Shropshire. It was on sale in Pengwern books in Shrewsbury and was thinking of buying it. I think the man who wrote it had explored all the caves so they will be accessible, although from the looks of it some would be very tricky to explore/visit.
Otherwise the Shropshire Caving and Mining club might be worth a look.
On Sundays over the summer there were short tours of the Snailbeach mines which were very interesting and a museum about mining in Shropshire. They might start up again next year, well worth a visit if you get the chance.
Edited to say that the first chapter of "The Folklore of Shropshire" by Roy Palmer has a section about underground places, both mythical and real caves inc. Goblin Hole nr Myddle, caves as dwellings in Quatford and Shrawley as well as Bridgnorth, Giant's Cave east of Stapeley Hill, Ogo/Ogof's Hole beneath Llanymynech Hill (poss a Roman copper mine)and Kynaston's Cave nr Nesscliffe
Freelance work means I pick and choose my activities, so I can have as much time on my hands as I like. Nergh.
That was much cooler in my head than when I looked at it on screen. :)
