Title: Judicial Review
Description: how much has it cost?

Does anyone else think that Robin Hooper should resign over this expensive fiasco? :(

I'm amazed you have not put this on the SABC site squeezer. Personally from someone looking in from the outside I think SABC over the years have got away with quite a few things without public consultation mainly because it didnt seem the general public showed interest ! The question to ask before Robin Hooper was made to resign would be did SABC act legally?

Anyone posting on that site risks a visit from the 'men in white coats!' as it is tantamount to talking to yourself! :D :D :D

Which seems to prove my point on the lack of interest by Shrewsbury people in what SABC do !

The decision to persue a judicial review was taken by the whole council not the chief executive who only did what the council had decided. The voting was 24 in favour with 15 against/abstaining.

As RH is the council solicitor as well as Chief Executive I presume he advised if not originated the whole idea.

He tried to save his nice job... and has now failed.

The chief executive may have advised but at the end of the day he is a council employee. Councillors often go against the recommendations of their officers - development control is a prime example. The buck stops with those councillors who voted to press ahead with a judicial review.

Does anyone else think the chances of him doing so are slightly less than the chances of Shrewsbury never flooding again? :)

Now this is interesting....
Shrewsbury Council have decided that if Congleton Borough Council decide to go to the Court of Appeal over the rejection of their joint application for a judicial review, then they will back them. This is so long as it doesn't cost them any more money. It seems they are banking on other interested councils picking up the bill. It appears that Congleton will only go to the Court of Appeal if there is a substantial contribution from other councils.
From Shrewsbury Council's website the cost to them of the application for a judicial review is said to be about £200,000 although their precise share of the bill for the government's costs is unknown. Other council's have promised £10,000 so the cost is estimated at £190,000.
If the other interested councils could only promise 5% of Shrewsbury Council's costs then the prospect of thier covering all the substantial costs involved in going to the Court of Appeal look remote.

I am sorry I think that Robin Hooper should now resign. As an insider I can tell you at the last council meeting. The councillors only got the papers for the meeting when it started.
and the Labour group tryed to put a motion forward against spending any more taxpayers money on this. but this was ruled out by Robin Hooper.
The torys had a three line whip on the subject and that is why 24 voted for Judicial Review. But I tell you most torys would have not been in support of carrying on if they had a choice.
As I said at the start he should resign and so should Peter Nutting for letting him push the torys around!!
