Title: Bad Driving
eatshrewsbury - October 10, 2007 12:33 PM (GMT)
I drive a 20 mile stretch of the A49 in the South of the county each day and it never ceases to amaze me how many bad drivers there are. I know, I know, this old chestnut again, but nothing changes and yet it needs to.
The latest crop of village idiots over take me in the 40mph limit (while I am doing 39mph) in the section of roadworks in Marshbrook. What’s that all about!? And don’t even get me started on the number of people I see every day using their mobile phones. Mind you, I lay a part of the blame for that one on the idiots who think that a £60 is going to put people off. And my current favourite are the people, well comedians really, who drive at 40mph in a 60 limit causing a big queue of traffic behind them, then as soon as they hit a 30mph limit everyone else slows down but they keep trucking at 40mph.

The other day I was driving to Shrewsbury through Cressage with a lorry virtually in my boot. The speed limit there is 30 mph and that's what I was doing. The lorry overtook me by the post office, still well within the restricted zone. What amazed me was that another lorry then thundered past me as well.

They should have fixed speed cameras in ALL the 30 and 40 limit areas. Let the idiots who break the law and risk other people's lives plough their cash into the public purse. I have a feeling that would soon slow them down. I suppose it is the same with everything. People only play by the rules if they are likely to face the consequences by not doing so.

I think some lorry drivers are the 'bullies' of the road these days. I'm not impressed by other european lorry driving habits either. On the motorways they sway from lane to lane and are generally inconsiderate. I think the days are coming when every driver has a camera in their car recording his or her journey. The pace of life doesnt seem to slow down does it?

Ban cars inside settlements of more than 10,000 people. Then it will. :)
Or there's congestion charging. Or Park'n'Ride. Or....<sigh>
How about a subway system? As long as it doesn't get too close to the Severn, else the trains would become submarines in winter time..

I'm not sure how congestion parking, park and ride or a subway will stop the idiots on the A49 who don't know how to drive? I had a classic this morning. Big guy in a big sliver mercedes driving a couple of inches behind me waving his arms and swearing at me. My crime. I was doing 30mph in the 30mph limit through the Bayston Hill gap. He overtook me before the end of the limit and drove down past Condover at about 80mph. I know it wasn't very charitable but I was hoping that I would find him wrapped around a telegraph pole.

.............will we get onto 4x4's soon? How ridiculous is their function in a town? The school run seems awash with them now and I dont really feel that some people who drive them are that skilled

I'm looking forward to the re-introduction of sedan chairs as a way of getting about within the town centre. The extra wide doorways of houses around St John's Hill and therabouts were designed with this in mind, after all.
After all, if we're going to have rickshaws pootling along Victoria Avenue, and that chap who looks like Shrek patrolling the Quarry in a golf cart to confiscate illicit bottles of vodka from teenagers, surely there must be an easier way to travel from my house to the station?

Because if congestion charging means you have to pay £250 to get into town just for one day but can take the bus for £1, which would you do? :)
I'm with Andy on the SUVs thing too. The number of people who drive vehicles with cattle guards when they live in a nice house in Copthorne (or somewhere like it) is quite absurd.
I'd like a sedan chair too. Drawn by Amazons. :)

i used to live in hadnall and pulled out of my road to see a lorry overtake a car in the 30 area and once we were out of the 30 area an unmarked police car turned on its siren-i thought it was for me to start with ! but it overtook me and stopped the lorry, he he he what a shame?
i get very annoyed with people on mobiles etc last week i overtook someone on the bayston hill straight and when i looked in my mirror a car had come from nowhere and overtook with me-but was on her mobile!! how can you concentrate doing that?
the same car then proceeded to drive right up my bumper and just as we passed long gardens filling station the moron decided to overtake me and the vehicle in front whilst going up a blind hill. there was noway the driver could tell if anything was coming and was just lucky-aarrgghh
i also get annoyed with the idiots that drive along at 40mph whatever the limit!

As a pedestrian what annoys me the most is people not indicating. It means you have to wait until there are no cars about before you can safely cross any side road. Otherwise you run the risk of a car not indicating and turning and they often don't slow down so you can't tell from the speed they're going either.
I once heard that if a pedestrian starts to cross a side road before a vehicle has started indicating to turn into that road then the pedestrian has right of way. Has anyone else heard this?

I always thought that you should give way to pedestrians crossing a junction and of course pedestrian crossings. The rest about pedestrians is in the highway code
It's here

you can also record such offences on a cameraphone or video camera and then report it . The evidence can be used to prosecute the offender if you feel so strongly about it !

This morning I had to cross the race track that is the roundabout at Dobbies.
A guy overtook me at speed and tried to cut me up.
He looked like he was having an epileptic fit.
He was hurling abuse at me and almost frothing at the mouth.
I had done absolutely nothing wrong except block his exit from the wrong lane.
Last time I looked the rule says give way to the people in front of you.
Not overtake and threaten to kill them.
I also saw a Royal Mail van take the same roundabout on Saturday as if it wasn't even there - hitting the back of another car!
