Title: New Meadow

avronb - July 15, 2007 07:05 PM (GMT)
Does anyone know if the new meadow stadium is going to be used for things other than football, like the recent Jools Holland concert for instance.

Given that the sound of Lulu shrieking in the Quarry last Friday was still audible at several hundred yards distance, this is good news for me. Perhaps not so much if you live in Meole or Sutton, though.

Was she singing'shout'? :D

There was someone on the radio this morning whos dog was 'injured' because of the fireworks she said. There was apparantly a hefty vets fee. Lock up your dogs and daughters when Lulu is on !!

I think she was.

Apart from fireworks, Sealed Knot explosions and the drums for the dragon boat racing, I don't hear much noise from events in the Quarry, so to hear her singing was surprising.

Strangely, I was having something of a text conversation with someone in the audience at the Quarry at the time (I was bored of being at home working, this being Friday night). When I mentioned that I could hear Lulu singing 'Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah' at full throttle, I was told that she had left the stage some time ago.

Now I think that the most obvious explanation for this is that the sound waves emitted by Lulu must be persistent, but only move slowly. They're probably at this moment just reaching the coast of France.

No concerts are allowed at the Stadium under the planning conditions except for a carol concert.

It would take an amendment to the planning conditions to allow them, and as SABC and STFC seem to have fallen out rather spectacularly recently I veyr much doubt it will happen until our unitary councillors vote it through in about 3 or 4 years time.

Hello, Throbs. Thanks for that.

Do you know if other non-football events are allowed at the new ground? For example, in the summer could the pitch be used for exhibitions, fairs or sports events?

mattsnapper - August 31, 2007 12:42 PM (GMT)
It is a great venue - however it all depends on if the SABC gives events of such nature a thumbs up

The folk festival was held over last weekend at the West Midland Showground. Noticed a large number of camping tents, caravans etc. If it's ok there why not have them at the new ground? :D

I am pretty sure the groundsmen at the new meadow would object to tents various wheeled vehicles and hundreds of people wandering about on "their" pitch just think of the mess and anyhow after the way the council have behaved I personally would suggest they went to see a taxidermist!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, lairdmichael, my post wasn't worded well!

What I meant was that there is plenty of room at the site outside the stadium for parking, caravans and tents. There is Park & Ride next door ( not for football matches but ok for the Flower Show).

There is covered seating for 10,000 at the ground with modern facilities and catering. The pitch could be covered for concerts as used to happen at Wembley Stadium.

A perfect venue you'd think were it not for the planning conditions set by the council. That's fair enough but how come events at the Quarry and the West Midland Showground are treated differently?

jonesy55 - September 4, 2007 06:45 PM (GMT)
I would think that local businesses like guest houses, cafes, pubs, shops and restaurants benefit more from events in the Quarry or even the West Mid than they would from events at a venue right on the edge of town near to the bypass. A lot of people going to events at the NM would probably just drive in and drive away again after the event has finished.

If somebody built a footbridge from the West Mid ground/Berwick Road to Mountfields/Frankwell, it would make the town centre much more accessible from events held there.

That is a good idea but like all good ideas in Shrewsbury it will never happen. They dont even use the "Bailey Bridge" for the West Mid now!

No the Football club can only have a carol service once a year on the field the planning permision does allow them to have events inside such as boxing and partys.

Hope this helps :ph43r:

That takes me back! Didn't the Army provide it? Access was via a narrow footpath next to the river wasn't it, after going down some steps? Health and safety issues galore.

I lived in Darwin St. in the late 1970s and the whole area used to transform from a very quiet backwater to a tourist spot for the W/E of the W Mid Show.
There would be hot dog vans, ice cream sellers and the 'bailey' bridge ran if I remember rightly from the end of Mount St. as you say, down the steps at the end.

It probably was the Army who erected it, the squaddies were a massive presence in the town then often getting drunk and doing things like diving off the bridges into the river for a dare!
