Title: Nearly Potter Day
frogger - July 15, 2007 07:51 AM (GMT)
So how many people do you think will turn up in Shrewsbury to get the Harry Potter book at midnight? Will you be one of them?
I'm going to admit that I'll be queuing up ready for midnight and bouncing around in excitement. The question is whether to dress up or not.
Pathetic isn't it? :)

I suppose it's no different to people queuing up for the latest games console or for the January sales. Each to his own. I imagine it could be a bit of a social event. Frogger.

It's going to rain all week so that might put many people off, we've got a copy pre-ordered but I'm not queuing in the rain at midnight to get it, i'll wait for the next day!

The nearest bookstore is 90 miles away. Might wait until we get to the UK to buy a copy for my daughter and grandkids.

Are there no bookshops in Ojinaga?

There's a big event taking place at Enginuity in Ironbridge, I have been invited might go and see what its all about...
I believe that the audio version of the book will be on 18 CDs.

Estoy viviendo en la frontera de Mexico y Tejas. On the Mexican border. The nearest American hospital, pharmacy, bookstore, movie theatre, Mc Donalds, etc. are 90 miles away.
Jonesy, I thought you said you didn't go to Ojinaga when you were here. No hay nada en Ojinaga. There's nothing worth buying there.
Oh, and the nearest Wal Mart is in Chihuahua....130 miles away. That, I'm happy about. AND, the nearest stop light not caution light is about 130 miles away.

I didn't, that's why I don't know if you can buy Harry Potter books there!

Well at least the rain was easing off. By my quick unscientific survey, I'd say by far the biggest queue was at Waterstones, next at WH Smith, with only a small gang of cognoscenti at Pengwern (despite it being about a minute's walk from Waterstones).
Shows the power of hype, I suppose, although it was nice to see life in the town on the Friday evening that wasn't solely composed of drunken lads, chavvy girls shrieking and falling over and steroid-abusing doormen.

Wonder if a broomstick could be classed as an offensive weapon. I was in London yesterday and saw several being abused by young whipper-snapping potter fans?

My daughters book came in the post this morning from Amazon,we didn,t even have to dress up.
The internet is great.

From the Shrops Star
Confusion as store stays shut
The clamour to get a copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows caused confusion among some fans in Shrewsbury.
About 20 people queued at the Asda store in Shrewsbury - despite it not being one of the stores opening at midnight.
One Shropshire Star reader said: “Just after midnight people were starting to suspect it might not be opening and eventually people started a mass exodus to Tesco at about 12.15am.”

Hmm. Compared, say, to the mighty migration of buffalo across the Great Plains, where the skies ring out to the sound of tens of thousands of hooves on the move, 20 people pootling from Asda to Tesco at a quarter past midnight is hardly a mass exodus.
I noticed that Asda's 'greeter' looked even more cheerful than usual this morning is his pointy hat, black coat and Harry Potter specs. Although, to be fair, the sight of someone dressed as a wizard pushing trolleys about in the car park is not something you see very often.
Andy Cooke - July 21, 2007 06:13 PM (GMT)
Dont ever make contact with an Asda greeter you do so at your peril! They always pick someone who look like they've been an 'extra' from a Lord of the rings movie
frogger - July 29, 2007 06:02 PM (GMT)
I did end up dressing up. I was suprised that there weren't more in fancy dress. At the other Harry Potter midnight openings I've been to about quarter have been dressed up. At least the Waterstones staff had made a big effort with their costumes and the atmosphere was electric. I suppose collecting the book at midnight or getting it later is like the difference in being at a concert and watching it on television,
Aparently JK Rowling is writing two books at the moment (non-Harry Potter ones) but I don't think they'll be much compared to the others.
the old codger - July 30, 2007 10:59 PM (GMT)
Sounds like a fun event. Good job you didn't queue outside Asda!
