How long does it take to build a pavement in this town?the work on castle gates goes on and on,i feel sorry for the traders down there,it must be killing their trade.

It is a rather good pavement though.

One of the traders I saw in the papers said they were going to have to close soon after Christmas. Do they think these works will go on forever?! The pavement works on Castle Gates/Street will be pretty much complete by the end of Summer!!

These improvments will go all the way up to Barclays bank according to the plans. G.

How can all this expense and distruption improve things on Castle Gates?

The full scheme of pavement and road improvements is for the entire route from the railway station, up Castle Gates, Castle Street, St Mary's Street, Dogpole, down Wyle Cop to the English Bridge.

Somewhat suspect it will be a few years yet before it's all complete!

Because when it's finished we will have a much better street scene/public realm for shoppers, pedestrians, tourists, etc. 1 year of disruption for what will probably be 50 years of use is worth it.

Well let's hope they do a proper job and it lasts longer than the cobbles then.

Other towns have cobbles which were put down with the correct foundations and were combined with a restriction on the sort of vehicles allowed to enter the town.
York for example.

I was really disappointed when they scrapped the cobbles,I thought that they were aesthetically pleasing and deterred people from driving through town.

I walked up Castlegates today and I think that they are doing a great job,it is looking much better already.
