Title: Shrewsbury Weir

Will someone please tell me what purpose the weir serves in Shrewsbury,if it had been constructed as a lock boats could pass down stream, and it could be opened in times of flood to let the water through more quickly, a water turbine would also be a good idea.

it was built to stop the "Shrewsbury Stink".

In summer when the water got low it started to pong, a walk along Coton Hill in very hot/dry weather can still give you a blast from the past.

The weir may have served a purpose when it was built but now it seems to only prevent boat traffic from reaching the town, a potential source of tourist income. Given the very short drop it is unlikely to generate much Hydro power I would have thought but if this is a feasible idea, maybe a lock could be built in the middle.

I'm sure I read somewhere about plans to make a marina type thing for pleasure boats on the river by the Gay Meadow site as part of the redevelopment, did I just dream this because I haven't heard anything since?

On a related note, is it only me that thinks the build-up of silt, sludge and weeds by the English bridge is very unsightly? One entire arch of the bridge is blocked and it'll soon be two if nothing is done.

the marina idea was scrapped in favour of more housing.

silting is a problem all along the town stretch, the boat that does the river rides ran aground last week and the passengers had to be rescued.

We are trying to be like Chester with this boating idea, but it will never work here, for like you say the river has been allowed to silt up too much, and no lock in the weir.

I saw the 'incident' live from the riverbank opposite Benbow Quay!!

Some workers from the Environmental Technology Centre building site used some big planks to try moving the boat away from the treacherous rocks.

I think you would find if they removed the weir you could walk from one bank to the other without getting your feet wet.....
