Have you missed me?
MOving day went really well didn't get stuck in ANY traffic and all the stops were volontary(hmmm) so yay. No flack jacket needed yet and mr baseball bat is STILL packed shhhhhh.
However I am having the biggest nightmare with Tesco broadband... had it in my previous place for 2 years never any trouble I could be online & use the phone & people could phone me but since I have had it here it drops my internet connection 10 seconds after the phone connects ringing in or out, and it is also saying in my internet connections that it is dial-up Broadband??? I have tried ringing the helpline apart from it being 60p a minute, they connect you and say we value your custom & will be with you shortly then 30 mintues later & if my maths is right £18 lighter still no answer.......ANYONE got any ideas? I have even emailed from the tesco website but have heard nothing
Other than that I like shrewsbury so far, went on a Ghost walk a couple of weeks ago which was interesting and have found an Italian night class!

Welcome to Salop, Mystic. It doesn't usually rain like this at this time of year by the way.
Don't waste your time or money on the "help" line. When you get through all they do is read from a script. Try this site
http://www.dslzoneuk.netThere's a message board there where you can get loads of free advice. You'll need to register first and then you can explain your problem. You'll get replies from people who know their stuff.
In the meantime, do you have any telephone sockets other than the one your modem is plugged into? If so do you have filters on any telephones plugged into them?

| Welcome to Salop, Mystic. |
What is 'Salop'? Is it a pet/old name for Shropshire or Shrewsbury perhaps? Make me wiser please!
Hope to be joining you soon, Mystic. Where did you escape from? I've forgotten (sleepless Mummy brain engaged), sorry.
You'll have to give us pointers on where to go and where to avoid.

It's the old name for Shropshire although some people also use it for Shrewsbury itself. I think it was dropped because it's a rather insulting term for a lady in French.
the old codger - July 14, 2007 09:01 AM (GMT)
That's it in a nutshell, Jonesy.
From Wikipedia "The origin of the name "Shropshire" is the Old English "Scrobbesbyrigscīr" (literally Shrewsburyshire), perhaps taking its name from Richard Scrob (or FitzScrob or Scrope), the builder of Richard's Castle near what is now the town of Ludlow. However, the Normans who ruled England after 1066 found both "Scrobbesbyrig" and "Scrobbesbyrigscir" difficult to pronounce so they softened them to "Salopesberia" and "Salopescira". Salop is the abbreviation of these.
When a council for the county was set up in 1888, it was called "Salop County Council". The name was never popular, with local MP Jasper More raising an amendment to the 1972 Local Government Bill to rename the county "Shropshire" - at the time the council itself opposed the change, although later, in 1980, would exercise its power to legally change the name of the county.
The term "Salopian", derived from "Salop", is still used to mean "from Shropshire". Salop can also mean the county town, Shrewsbury, and in historical records Shropshire is described as "the county of Salop" and Shrewsbury as "the town of Salop".
The Latin motto of "Floreat Salopia" (may Shropshire flourish) was originally used by the borough of Shrewsbury, and was adopted in 1896 by Salop (or Shropshire) County Council when they received a grant of a coat of arms. The motto is now used in a number of other emblems associated with the county.
Another reason why Salop was unfavourable was the fact that if you add the letter 'E' and make it Salope, this is a French word and means 'Bitch or Loose Woman'.
When I was a lad, out in the country, people didn't say that they'd been to Shrewsbury. It was always that they'd been to Salop.

I must be very old ;) I still go to Salop And I am from Salop and 90% of people understand me!!
the old codger - July 14, 2007 11:41 AM (GMT)
I still use the term as well, lairdmichael, but you don't hear it so often these days. There used to be all sorts of local dialects with some words having a completely different meaning elsewhere. I suppose we are moving towards a standard form of English where you canna say munna, it inna polite. One thing that'll never be standard though is as to how Shrewsbury is pronounced.............. :D
Proud Salopian - July 15, 2007 10:47 AM (GMT)
I use the term as well and I use it for both the town of Salop and its county.

kateharris - July 16, 2007 09:54 AM (GMT)
well i think the term salop seems to be getting used more and more at the shrewsbury town games.
as in "play up salop", "breathe on em salop" etc and often now they just chant "salop" over and over, whereas previously i thought the term was diminishing, so it is therefore used now for the county, the town and our local team
