Depends on where about you find work.

Word of advice: public transport around here in general is rather poor.

I travel every day to Birmingham to work and there are lots of other Shrewsbury folk who are on the train with me doing the same so the commutable area is pretty big. I even know one guy who drives to near Reading four days a week but I think that's a little extreme personally.

I'd say that anywhere in Shropshire is easily commutable from Shrewsbury with your own transport and places with good rail links like Brum, Wolverhampton, Crewe, Welshpool or Chester are also pretty easy so long as your workplace is near the train station at your destination.

If you are going to the back of beyond in some small village you will need to drive but to be honest that's not where the jobs are. People tend to live in the villages and travel into the town, not the other way round.

Shrewsbury Sixth Form is as good as any I think.

I'd endorse Jonesy55's post.

If you go to page 3 you'll see a post from schizoidgal who was moving here as well. The replies might be useful and there are further postings on page 2.

Where are you now, Elidh, and what sort of work would you be looking for?

I live in Shrewsbury and work in Crewe - it's about 30 minutes on the train (40 minutes if you stop in between, but there are express services), and there's services every half hour or so. Anywhere in south Cheshire / the Stoke-on-Trent area of Staffordshire (aka the Potteries) ought to be doable.

I live in the southern area of Stoke on Trent, and that's 30 minutes drive from the Harlescott area of Shrewsbury.

Knowing where you live Chingwakabungya - do you really describe that as being in "the southern area of Stoke on Trent"?? You're closer to Stafford, no?
